Veteran IF Neil Walker elects free agency after clearing waivers

Veteran IF Neil Walker elects free agency after clearing waivers Although Walker wasn’t particularly sharp with the Phillies, he notched a solid .261/.344/.395 batting line with the Marlins just last year. He was also a consistently productive hitter from 2010-17, slashing a combined .273/.342/.439 in 4294 plate appearances between the Pirates, Mets and Brewers. He’ll be eligible to sign with any club for the duration of the season should he choose. If he does latch on with a new club by Tuesday, he’d still be eligible for his new club’s postseason roster.Subscribe to Yardbarker's Morning Bark, the most comprehensive newsletter in sports.

Padres activate 1B Eric Hosmer off IL

Padres activate 1B Eric Hosmer off IL Hosmer has been fantastic through 128 plate appearances this season, hitting .288/.344/.552 with eight home runs. That’s a notable step up from the roughly average offensive production the big-ticket free agent acquisition managed his first two seasons in Southern California. The 33-19 Padres are essentially locked in as the fourth seed in the National League, and Hosmer will have a little more than a week to ramp back up before the start of the postseason. Patiño has scuffled in his first 14.2 MLB innings, but he’s one of the game’s brightest young pitching talents.

The Reds are coming off six losing seasons and haven’t been to the playoffs since 2013. They spent $156 million in the offseason — one of the majors' biggest splurges — to try to reverse course.

The Brewers (26-27) had their season-high four-game winning streak snapped, wasting a chance to move above .500 for the first time this season. They've reached break-even seven times.
