A longtime LSU football fan was beaten and bloodied during a robbery in a restroom at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, La. on Saturday following a game.

Season ticket holder Daniel “Danny” Dwyer told The Advocate the incident happened after the LSU’s win over South Carolina and after the Golden Band from Tigerland, the school’s marching band, played its final song.

“Normally, there’s 80,000 to 100,000 people at an LSU game. You’re never alone,” Dwyer said. “During these unfortunate times, with the lower number of people, there’s more opportunity for a one-on-one encounter.”

Dwyer, who attended the game alone, stopped in a restroom on his way to his car. Dwyer saw three or four men in the restroom, including one with a broom, dustpan and bucket, but does not know who attacked him.

Dwyer said the moments before the attack were very quiet because the usual raucous crowd was not around because of limited seating capacity under the state’s coronavirus restrictions, but he did not sense anyone standing behind him before the attack started.

“It forced me to kind of back up and go down on my knees. He continued to rain blows down on my head and the side of my head,” Dwyer said, describing the attack.

“I believe he wanted to incapacitate me, so he could reach down and get the wallet out of my pocket,” he said. Dwyer said the attacker grabbed his wallet when he could not longer put his hands up in defense.

“I do remember seeing blood trickling down from under my cap and onto the floor,” he said.

The attacker ran out of the room and Dwyer soon after left the restroom and found a group of state troopers.

He was treated for three head lacerations by university emergency medical services staff before he was transferred to a hospital before he was released Sunday.

LSU said the incident was under investigation.

“It was a typical 2020 night,” Dwyer told The Advocate. “If you have to wrap up the year 2020, this would fall right in place.”
