Transaction retrospection: Mike Yastrzemski trade

Transaction retrospection: Mike Yastrzemski trade Even if Yastrzemski takes a bit of a step back from his star-level production, he at least looks like an above-average regular. His late-career breakout is another reminder that even the lowest-profile transactions have some chance of being impactful.Subscribe to Yardbarker's Morning Bark, the most comprehensive newsletter in sports. The White Sox announced that they’ve signed free-agent catcher Yasmani Grandal to a four-year contract. He’ll be guaranteed a hefty MM, the team announced, which will be paid out evenly at .25MM per year. As per The Athletic’ s Ken Rosenthal (Twitter link), Grandal ’ s deal includes a full

In signing Yasmani Grandal , Chicago officially closed its rebuilding window and showed it will try to chase down Minnesota and Cleveland in 2020. More moves are coming. "I'm not sure how we'll be perceived with other free agents," White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said during a conference call.

On this date a year ago, the White Sox signed All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal to a four-year, $73 million free agent contract. That proved to be the biggest splash of an eventful 2019-20 offseason for the South Siders, who also extended franchise icon (and eventual MVP) José Abreu and brought in Dallas Keuchel and Edwin Encarnación.

Chicago’s active offseason clearly signaled it believed its rebuild was through. The hope was that Grandal’s two-way prowess would help solidify the pitching staff and add some offense to a lineup that had been below average in 2019. In the first year of the deal, the 32-year-old delivered.

Grandal signed with the White Sox for 4 years at 73 million dollars. What does this mean for the White Sox next season. That is what I talk about.

Yasmani Grandal bet on himself last winter when he turned down a reported four-year, million offer from the Mets and wound up signing a one-year deal The White Sox are very clearly on the right track toward that end with Grandal , and the Twins and Indians both have a lot of questions to answer

Grandal posted a .230/.351/.422 slash line with eight home runs over 194 plate appearances. A spike in strikeouts contributed to that meager .230 batting average, but Grandal more than offset that by drawing plenty of walks and hitting for power. His 117 wRC+ indicates he was 17 points better than the league average hitter this past season. That’s right in line with his career production and not too far off the pace of his previous two years.

Single-season defensive metrics are quite fluky; that’s all the more true in a season prorated to 60 games. Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that Grandal also rated as a top five pitch framer in the sport in 2020, per Statcast. That’s par for the course, as the former first-rounder perennially rates as one of the league’s best at stealing strikes. He also cut down six of 13 attempted base stealers. There’s no question Grandal was a key piece of Chicago’s 35-25 record, which was enough to qualify for the expanded postseason format.

Sean Anderson, Ricky Widmer, and Dave Oster discuss what the signing of Yasmani Grandal means for the rest of the offseason for the Chicago White Sox

Yasmani Grandal will be paid .25 million for each year of his four-year contract. Yasmani Grandal , the switch-hitter who is consistently among the most productive catchers in the game, on Thursday agreed to a free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox .

Grandal’s continued presence on the roster is a big reason the Sox aren’t expected to re-sign James McCann, who profiles as the second-best catcher on the market this offseason on the heels of a monster 2020 effort. Wherever McCann ends up, the White Sox should still have one of the league’s best catching situations. GM Rick Hahn and the rest of the front office have to be pleased with the initial return on their biggest investment last winter.

Three-time All-Star Edwin Encarnacion plans to play in 2021

Three-time All-Star Edwin Encarnacion plans to play in 2021 With 424 career homers and a long track record of performance prior to 2020, Encarnacion is sure to get some attention on the open market. However, his chances of landing another deal would greatly improve if the National League adopts the designated hitter again in 2021. Encarnacion was deployed exclusively as a DH last season and has mostly worked only as a part-time first baseman in the last few years, so it remains to be seen if an NL team would entrust Encarnacion with a regular (or even semi-regular) first base gig without the luxury of a DH spot to keep him fresh.

How will Yasmani Grandal ' s offensive and pitch-framing skills age during the crucial—especially for a catcher—age-31-to-34 span covered by his recent deal with the White Sox ?

But at least one of those players could become a trade chip if the Mets sign Ozuna, and as Davidoff notes, picking the right-handed hitter up would provide some more balance to a left-leaning lineup. Of course, before Ozuna signs anywhere, he and the rest of the league might have to find out whether the universal designated hitter will stick around in 2021.
