O’Brien was replaced on an interim basis by Crennel, who is beloved in the locker room and is far less hostile than Houston’s former coach. The 73-year-old is the oldest coach in NFL history, and earlier reports suggested he was a strong candidate to return.

According to NFL insider Benjamin Allbright, those connected within the Broncos’ front office are pushing back against the national narrative that Fangio’s job could be on the line.

One of the most-respected defensive minds in modern NFL history, the 62-year-old Vic Fangio has posted a 11-17 record as the Broncos’ head coach since they hired him ahead of the 2019 season.

There’s certainly been major issues on offense, primarily at quarterback. Last season saw Denver finish 28th in both points scored and total yards. Thus far this season under Vic Fangio, Denver ranks second-to-last in points scored.

Again, that’s primarily due to lackluster quarterback play in the Mile High City. The numbers are downright terrible with the likes of Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, Jeff Driskel and Brett Rypien, among others, taking snaps under center since the start of the 2019 NFL season.

  • Attempts: 885
  • Completions: 525
  • Completion %: .593
  • Yards: 5,908 yards
  • Touchdowns: 28
  • Interceptions: 29
  • QB rating: 76.2

Those are some disastrous numbers. However, it must be noted that general manager John Elway shares in some of the blame.

He’s failed to get the Broncos a franchise-type quarterback since all-time great Peyton Manning retired following the 2015 season. In fact, Broncos signal callers have accounted for a combined 86 touchdowns and 77 interceptions over the course of the past 75 games. That obviously predates Vic Fangio’s tenure in Denver.

Where does the team go from here?

Remember, Denver moved on from then-offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello after just one season earlier this year. Fangio ultimately replaced him with veteran offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who has not done a much better job this season.

There’s a chance Denver looks for a third offensive coordinator in three seasons under Fangio. Then again, there’s also no guarantee that the head coach will return to the Broncos for a third season. That’s still very much up in the air. As of right now, his job appears to be safe for the remainder of the 2020 season.

How will the remainder of the 2020 season look?

Denver sits at 4-7 on the year after a disastrous 31-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 12. It’s a game that saw Vic Fangio and Co. forced to go with practice squad wide receiver Kendall Hinton at quarterback due to COVID-19 related issues.

Shawn Drotar says the timeframe in which NFL coaches have to succeed has become shorter, but Fangio is not at risk.

It’s unfortunate. A win against New Orleans would have pushed the Broncos to 5-6 on the season and in legit playoff contention. By virtue of having no quarterback on the field, Denver was blown out. It is now three games out of the final playoff spot in the AFC.

Vic Fangio will likely be judged by how these Broncos play over the final five games of the season. That span includes three games against winning teams.
