The two-time motorcycle world champion and today's MotoGP team boss Fausto Gresini has been put into an artificial coma after suffering from COVID-19.

This was announced by the Gresini racing team on Friday. The 59-year-old's condition has improved slightly in the meantime.

The Italian was admitted to a hospital in his hometown of Imola on December 27 after a positive corona test. The transfer to Bologna took place three days later. There Gresini was put into a coma, the oxygen saturation in the blood was very low at that time. According to the team, the doctors began to initiate the wake-up process on Friday.

Gresini was twice world champion

The 21-time Grand Prix winner Gresini was world champion in the 125cc class in 1985 and 1987.

In MotoGP he is at the head of the Aprilia team. Gresini Racing is also active in Moto2 and Moto3.
