Why Tokyo has another COVID-19 emergency, and how it's fighting it

Why Tokyo has another COVID-19 emergency, and how it's fighting it Japan has had relative success combatting the coronavirus, but many accuse its leader of failing to brace for the winter wave of infections - and delaying his response to it. The latest state of emergency (SOE) declaration is highly targeted, covering only Tokyo and the three prefectures surrounding it, which account for half of Japan's coronavirus cases. Urbanized western and central Japan may later be added to the order.

The Games were placed in increased jeopardy earlier this month when Tokyo declared a state of emergency due to an increasing number of coronavirus cases, and public opinion has swayed strongly towards canceling the event altogether. On Thursday the International Olympic Committee (IOC)

"The Canadian Olympic Committee has confidence that the Games can be staged safely and successfully given what has been learned in sport over the last several months and the emphasis the IOC and Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee have placed on Covid-19 countermeasures," he said.

TOKYO (Reuters) - The Japanese government on Friday rejected press reports that it would see the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics, due next summer, to be inevitable in cause of the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking at a press briefing, a government spokesman said "strongly denies" the possibility of a cancellation, adding that the article published earlier by The Times was wrong.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told parliament that he is determined that the Tokyo Olympics take place as planned.

"With your support, we'll emerge from this tunnel of darkness," Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori exhorted his 3,500-strong staff in an online new year address. The Japan Olympic Committee chair vowed to "do his best, to the very end, to bring many people joy and hope," a version of the refrain adopted when the Games were originally postponed in March 2020.

The Japanese government has privately concluded the Tokyo Olympics will have to be canceled because of COVID-19, various media outlets reported The Times said an unnamed senior member of Japan's government had conceded defeat in the city's efforts to stage the games , admitting the focus

Citing a high-ranking source in the ruling Tokyo coalition, The Times reported that the Japanese government has come to the conclusion internally that the Olympics will have to be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tokyo was initially supposed to host the 32nd edition of the Summer Olympics last year, but Japan and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had decided to postpone the event for one year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Olympics are currently scheduled for July 23 to August 8, 2021.

The Tokyo Games Organizing Committee has declared that all partners, including the Japanese government and the IOC, are "fully focused" on hosting events this summer.

Via Twitter, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee said it had not received "any information suggesting that the Games will not take place as planned" and that the preparation of American athletes was continuing normally.

COMMENT: Japan's Shame Games - Tokyo 's bid to avoid embarrassment is the driving force behind its reluctance to cancel the £20BILLION Olympics as coronavirus continues to lay waste to sport. Japan won't be to blame if coronavirus causes the Olympics to be scrapped. But it will be considered

According to The Times, the Japanese government now aims to secure the organization of the next Olympic Games, still unassigned, in 2032.

If Japan has been less severely affected by the health crisis than many other developed economies, a recent surge in new cases of contamination has forced the authorities to declare a state of emergency for the Tokyo region and to close its borders to foreign nationals who are not permanent residents.

Around 80% of the Japanese population say they are against holding the Olympic Games in the capital next summer, recent opinion polls show, fearing that the massive influx of athletes from around the world will accelerate the spread of the virus.

In this context, writes The Times, the Japanese government seeks to preserve appearances by announcing the cancellation of the Olympics while leaving the door open to a subsequent organization of the event in Tokyo.

"Nobody wants to be the first to say it, but the consensus is that it is too complicated," said the source quoted by the newspaper. "I don't think they're going to take place."
