Tua Tagovailoa brushes aside uncertainty, works on elevating his game to the next level

Tua Tagovailoa brushes aside uncertainty, works on elevating his game to the next level The Dolphins QB caught up with CBS Sports to discuss how he's preparing for his second seasonTua Tagovailoa has had a dramatic year. While he was selected No. 5 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, he was at the same time recovering from a major hip injury that had many wondering about his future as an NFL quarterback. Even after Tagovailoa was inserted into the starting lineup in Week 8 and won three straight games, Dolphins head coach Brian Flores opted to bench him in Week 11, and then again in Week 16 despite always maintaining the rookie was his starting quarterback.

Given the choice between his two former quarterbacks, Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith picked Mac Jones over Tua Tagovailoa during an interview at the Senior Bowl, according to Albert Breer of The MMQB. "The question was barely finished before Smith answered: Mac Jones ," Breer wrote. Jones has been more overlooked as a former 3-star prospect without the athleticism seen in other top players at his position. Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon projected Jones would be taken 12th overall in his latest mock draft, making him the fifth quarterback off the board.

Senior wideout DeVonta Smith addressed the media via Zoom and vocalized the confidence he has in Jones heading into the season opener on Saturday night against Missouri. "Yes, I believe in Mac the same way I believed in Tua [ Tagovailoa ]," Smith said. "As far as him being a leader, just when we come to the sideline after we take our reps and the things we talk about and what didn’t go right on the play or what we could have done better, the lets me know that he’s in for it and he’s ready to lead the team.”

DeVonta Smith isn’t the first Alabama player to be spoiled by the talent surrounding him in Tuscaloosa.

The Heisman-winning wide receiver had the benefit of catching passing from Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones for most of his collegiate career, giving him a unique perspective on what each of the talented quarterbacks brings to the table.

Tagovailoa was the No. 5 overall pick in last year’s draft, but some have wondered whether or not Jones is a better prospect after his incredibly productive 2020 season, one that saw the Crimson Tide go undefeated and win another national title.

Alabama head coach, Nick Saban mentioned all last week on Tua Tagovailoa being a ‘game-time’ decision against LSU on Nov. 9. While sources have confirmed with Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine on how well the junior quarterback is doing, Saban continues to keep things close to the vest. With the gamesmanship he is playing, does he pull the hypothetical of starting Mac Jones just to mess with the Tigers. On last week’s recording of In My Own Words, Smith breaks down this scenario.

Smith was evidently asked by an NFL team at the Senior Bowl which quarterback he preferred, and his answer was pretty emphatic, per Albert Breer of SI.com:

So, while most projections and rankings consider Jones the fifth-best quarterback in this year’s class, Smith appears to have a much higher opinion of him.
