HRM] What do you think you'll be doing in a year?

DEJ] I don't know. Good question.

HRM] So you've made no plans?

DEJ] Nope. Not really.

HRM] Do you usually like to go with the flow?

DEJ] Well, I'm trying to make a plan. But we're still sort of in the figuring it out phase, I guess.

HRM] Is there anything you'll be glad to be rid of when you retire from driving?

DEJ] A bunch of little stuff. Little things around me. But they don't come to the top of my mind right now.

HRM] Okay. What do you think you're going to miss the most?

DEJ] The camaraderie and friendships. Working with the team and with my guys through practice and trying to figure things out. That's really fun.

HRM] Will you still be involved in racing in a few years?

DEJ] I think I will. I don't have a plan. Or a job. But I think I'll have something.

HRM] Maybe do some broadcasting?

DEJ] I have a lot of interest in doing that. I do. I just have to figure out if I can get a job doing it. I'd like to be a color commentator.

HRM] Being a racecar driver is a job. How do you start each day? What do you eat for breakfast?

DEJ] Usually I get some toast and put some peanut butter on it. And put bananas on that. Then a little bit of honey. Maybe I'll scramble some eggs and eat those.

HRM] Has that changed since you've been married?

DEJ] Not really. But she and I are a little bit different.

HRM] What has changed since you've been married?

DEJ] I'm definitely more outgoing. Go out to dinner more often. I used to be a hermit and a real introvert. I've completely changed in that regard.

HRM] Without racing obligations, will you spend more time out?

DEJ] Oh yeah. When you're racing you can't do much outside of racing.

HRM] Is there some place you'd like to travel to?

DEJ] Anywhere, for that matter. But I've never been to Alaska. And some parts of Europe. I've been to Germany and areas in France. I'd love to go to Le Mans and the Indy 500 and Kentucky Derby and things like that.

HRM] You did a little bit of endurance racing with the Corvette team. Would you like to do something like drive at Le Mans?

DEJ] I don't think so. If I do any sort of driving, it's going to be a little bit in the Xfinity Series working with our JR Motorsports team. I'm scheduled to run two races later this year and then two races next year. I'm happy to do a half a dozen a year for as long as they need me, because that helps to pull together partnerships and sponsorships for the other cars. And I have some late-model cars. I'll just grab my late-model, put in a trailer and go to Hickory some place and run on a Saturday night, randomly.

HRM] You've built a couple of hot rods. Would you like to build some more in the future?

DEJ] They are little projects that are kind of fun. Me and my buddies wanted to build a rat rod out of a Chevy Nomad. That would be fun.

HRM] Out of a Nomad? That's an expensive place to start.

DEJ] I know. I don't think that's going to be very realistic. But we do want to build a rat rod. We just need to figure out what cab we're going to use.

HRM] Do you get to drive the hot rods you have very often?

DEJ] I don't keep anything I don't drive or don't have time to drive. If a car is sitting around too long I get rid of it. It annoys me sitting there wasting away.

HRM] As you reach the end of your driving career, do you still get nervous in a racecar?

DEJ] All the time.

HRM] It hasn't gotten better over the years?

DEJ] A little bit. You get nervous for different reasons. When I was first starting out, I was maybe scared. Not really the danger, but just screwing up or doing something stupid. Now you're kind of scared of failure. Of not living up to everyone's expectations every single lap you run.

HRM] Does it help to be a little bit scared in the car?

DEJ] I think it does. If you respect the danger and the equipment and its limitations it makes a smart racer. I think it's reasonable to have some respect and some apprehension maybe. When you're young, of course, you don't have a lot of that. Until you hit something real hard. Then you get changed a little bit.

HRM] As this season goes on, do the races seem different this time?

DEJ] Precious is a good way to say it.

HRM] Why do you think you've been so popular with the fans?

DEJ] My last name. I helped hang onto it. I didn't screw it up. I think I grew my fan base by being genuine and authentic. I take some credit for growing the base, but it was a real nice starting point due just to who I was. I definitely own that and understand that.

HRM] How much of that was a conscious effort?

DEJ] It seemed like the more I was myself, the more people liked it. So I just kept going in that direction. That makes it super easy.

HRM] Is there some other driver who can be as popular as you've been?

DEJ] Chase Elliott definitely has that opportunity. Kyle Larson also has a great personality and tons of talent.

HRM] How much of a hassle is being famous?

DEJ] It's not really a hassle at all. There are so many advantages than to even think about the negatives.

HRM] Is there anywhere you can go to just be alone?

DEJ] Yeah, we went to Honduras this week. Monday and Tuesday visiting some of Amy's family. I'm certainly anonymous in that area. You don't have to worry if you have something hanging out of your nose too much. Be yourself and not worry about it.

HRM] Now that you're married, are you guys going to have some kids?

DEJ] That's the plan. I don't know when. We're going to see how things go.

HRM] Are there racing friendships you're going to work at sustaining?

DEJ] Yeah. Several drivers: Martin Truex Jr. and I own some property together in Ohio so we'll be hunting together for as long as we live. Me and Jimmie Johnson will be friends beyond driving. There are a bunch of guys in the garage that will stay friends.

HRM] What do you find surprising about this time in your life?

DEJ] I'm surprised at how nice people have been. In thanking me for my efforts and career and all that. Hearing that every day. I never saw that coming. And, honestly, I didn't know what to expect.

HRM] As you get down to the end, do you ever want to cry?

DEJ] [Laughing] I'm sure I will. It hasn't happened yet. There are a couple of national anthems where you get real emotional, but it hasn't happened yet.
