John Albert Elway Jr. (born June 28, 1960) is a former American football quarterback who is currently general manager and executive vice president of football operations of the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL).

“It’s hard to imagine John Elway running another franchise,” former sports agent Joel Corry said. “He’s got more leverage than any GM has had in quite a long time, because what were the Broncos like before he got there?

It’s a deal that is expected to come by the end of the year, but that doesn’t mean the sharks aren’t circling.

One shark, in particular — Rams owner Stan Kroenke — is reportedly interested in poaching the Broncos’ general manager and vice president of football operations.

There have been connections made between Kroenke, whose family owns both the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and the Denver icon. Elway and Kroenke were co-owners — along with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen — of the Arena Football League’s Colorado Crush from 2002-08.

John Elway is the Broncos and has been since 1983, really, and his value continues to soar. No executive, it could be argued, means more to a franchise than Elway does He, as arguably the most coveted GM in the NFL, is the only one with the leverage to get it. Elway ’s situation is complicated.

Broncos Tracks. Woody Paige: John Elway will become NFL's highest-paid VP/GM shortly | Colorado Springs Here is a list of some of the top teams in franchise history. John Elway could use Rams ' interest as leverage with How the Denver Broncos can get John Elway locked in long-term How

Could Kroenke lure Elway, who has called Denver home since 1983, to Los Angeles? The short answer is no.

What is more likely is Elway will use the Rams’ interest as leverage to get top-dollar from the Broncos.

Elway spent his entire playing career with the Broncos following a post-draft trade from the Baltimore Colts. He led Denver to five Super Bowl appearances, including consecutive championships in 1997 and 1998. He retired after earning Super Bowl MVP honors for Super Bowl XXXIII and was hired as the Broncos’ VP of football operations in 2011. He assumed general manager duties a year later and immediately signed former Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Since Elway took over football operations and player personnel, the Broncos have won five AFC West titles, two AFC championships and a Super Bowl. The Broncos missed the playoffs in the five years prior.

"We're working to get it done,'' Broncos CEO and president Joe Ellis told The Gazette. "We've had some productive discussions in the last week or so and will keep talking. John Elway could use Rams ' interest as leverage with Broncos .

Los Angeles Rams . Miami Dolphins. But a press conference by general manager John Elway at the NFL Combine gave reason to pump the brakes on that assumption. The Broncos being interested in Cousins has seemed like common sense from the start.

That’s the kind of turnaround a team like the Rams would love to have, but it’s not going to happen — at least not with Elway, who has repeatedly said he is not leaving Denver and expects to get a new contract.

“This will always be my home,” Elway told the Denver Post last August. “(I’m) not going anywhere. As a kid, I moved around quite a bit. But, Colorado and Denver will always be my home.”

So why hasn’t a new deal been worked out yet? That’s not a simple answer and complicated by the declining health of Bowlen, who at 73 is battling early onset Alzheimer's disease. Elway would like partial ownership of the team and could one day become the majority owner.

Elway could already have a share of the team, but declined a 10-percent minority share offer in 1998 for a deferred payment of $15 million. That stake would be worth about $480 million today as the team’s value has skyrocketed over the last 20 years.

Broncos, GM John Elway close to finalizing long-term deal, report says

The first day teams can use the franchise tag is Tuesday with a declaration required by March 1. The Broncos ’ offense features question marks, starting at quarterback. Elway said he doesn’t have a timetable for 39-year-old Peyton Manning to make a Osweiler has more leverage as a free agent.

“There were circumstances there that didn’t make it work out,” Elway told the Post. “It wasn’t because I didn’t want it to. It’s just that there were some circumstances there that I can’t go into that caused it not to work out, which I was obviously very disappointed with.”

With Bowlen no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of the Broncos, team president Joe Ellis is handling negotiations and is “optimistic” they’ll get something done with Elway.

It’s hard to imagine any circumstances that would prevent Elway and the Broncos from coming to an agreement on a new deal in the near future. And harder still to imagine a scenario where Elway leaves Denver for Los Angeles, or any other city.
