Blackmon, Arenado back Senzatela in win | Rockies - D - backs Game Highlights 6/18/19.

Senzatela thwarted several D - backs rally attempts, leaving two runners on base in three of his first four innings. After putting runners on the corners with no outs in the fifth, the right-hander allowed only one run -- an RBI fielder’s choice by David Peralta -- getting Adam Jones to ground into an inning-ending double While Senzatela dealt, the Rockies continued to rake. Nolan Arenado drove in the club’s first three runs with a two-run homer in the first and an RBI double in the sixth, which started a four-run rally also featuring a two-run double from Ryan McMahon. Leadoff hitter Charlie Blackmon recorded his

This is the third time in Senzatela’s career that he’s shutout a team for eight innings. He did so back in 2017 against the Cardinals and against the Astros in 2020. If the Rockies want to stay competitive day in and day out, they’ll need Senzatela and the rest of the starting rotation to give performances like these often.

Hampyman on the loose

Garrett Hampson got the Rockies going early as he leadoff the game with a single on a comebacker that ricocheted off Madison Bumgarner. Hampson then used his elite speed to steal second which forced an errant throw from catcher Carson Kelly that allowed Hampson to quickly bounce back up and reach third. Chris Owings brought him home on what was his second triple of the season so far.

Hampson’s night only got better from there as he added on an RBI single in the fourth inning and two more stolen bases including this very close one in the sixth.

Nolan Arenado has moved on from 'hurt feelings' in Colorado

Nolan Arenado has moved on from 'hurt feelings' in Colorado St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has moved on following his time with the Colorado Rockies. Back in 2020, star third baseman Nolan Arenado publicly vented his frustrations about the Colorado Rockies just one year removed from signing a massive eight-year, $260 million contract exte nsion. After the 2020 season, the Rockies made the tough choice to move on from Arenado, sending him to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela was no match for Arizona ’s ace. Greinke pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, striking out nine and walking none. The loss was Colorado’s fourth in a row, and its club-record eight -game winning streak over Arizona came to a screeching halt. So did the Rockies ’ six-game winning streak at Chase Field. Now 10-3 with a 2.73 ERA, Greinke became just the fourth pitcher since the wild-card era began in 1995 to notch 10 wins before the all-star break for four consecutive seasons.

Hampson scored three runs in the game and finished 2-for-3 with two walks and three stolen bases. Hampson’s all around spectacular game is arguably one of his best career performances. It’s up there with his two separate two home run games against the Giants in 2019 and 2020.

Owings stays hot

Chris Owings had another perfect day at the plate going 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBI’s. He and Garrett Hampson have proved to be quite the lethal combo in the lineup combining for half of the teams total runs. Owings was halfway to a cycle before he was removed from the game in the sixth inning due to “right leg soreness.” His status going forward is yet to be known.

Owings is now 7-for-14 on the season with three doubles and two triples.

Antonio Senzatela picked a great night for perhaps his best outing of the season. The Colorado right-hander allowed three hits in seven strong innings and the Rockies kept pace in their playoff push with a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night. With eight games to play, the Rockies trail the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers by 1 1/2 games in the NL West and are 1 1/2 behind St. Louis for the final NL wild-card spot.

Defense wins games

The Colorado Rockies of the past have always been fortunate to have some smooth defenders on the left side of the infield with Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado (sorry to bring him back up, I know) who routinely provided highlight plays. Tonight, we got to see some great defensive work that likely saved some runs from the first base (what? first baseman can make plays?) and catcher positions.

The first moment came in the third inning after Carson Kelly leadoff with a double. Tim Locastro grounded out with a sharp hit right at C.J. Cron and Cron made a great read and threw to third instead for a chase down tag, which likely saved a run.

The second instance of great defense came in the eighth inning with runners at first and third with two outs. Senzatela buries one in the dirt but Elias Díaz quickly gets to it and makes a perfect throw to third to tag the speedy Locastro out.

Coming up next

The rubber match for this Rockies and D-Backs series will be tomorrow afternoon. This will be the final game of the opening home stand before the Rockies head west to visit the Giants. The projected starters are Merrill Kelly (0-1, 6.75 ERA) and Jon Gray (0-0, 1.80 ERA) for both the Diamondbacks and Rockies respectively. Gray will look to build off his impressive but brief first start that saw him leave early due to cramps.

Arizona and Indiana both hope defense opens door to Final Four .
Arizona (19-5) and Indiana (21-5) have a lot in common. Two schools best known for men’s basketball and a legendary coach they have tried to replace. Two schools that, until two weeks ago, employed a member of the Miller family to coach those men. Two women’s teams that had never been beyond the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament. Winners of the last two WNIT championships. And two coaches using almost the exact same script in their press conferences leading into the Elite Eight. “Our defense creates our offense.” “Others may not believe, but our team believes.
