However, similarly to the rest of the competition, it will be a highly unusual event, with fans from both Japan and abroad prohibited, with Tokyo under a fourth state of emergency as coronavirus cases continue to rise.

TOKYO -- The Tokyo Olympics will open next year in the same time slot scheduled for this year' s games. Tokyo organizers said Monday the opening ceremony will take place on July 23 , 2021 -- almost exactly one year after the games were due to start. "The schedule for the games is key to preparing The new Olympic dates would conflict with the scheduled world championships in track and swimming, but those events are now expected to also be pushed back. "The IOC has had close discussions with the relevant international federations," organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto said.
