Sport NBA free agents 2021: Top players available, start date for free agency, salary cap
Zach LaVine says 'Obviously, I want to be with the Bulls,' about possible extension in Chicago
The Bulls can give LaVine a max deal now, but it would cost them their cap spaceThat is the conundrum that the Bulls find themselves in. They can pay LaVine right now, but doing so would prevent them from building a winning a team around him. They can try to put that winning team around him, but if they fail, they might not be able to keep him at all. There is no easy solution here, and one misstep would risk alienating most players in this situation.
The 2020-21 NBA season is complete, and that means free agency is right around the corner.
After signing with the Clippers just two years ago, Kawhi Leonard could once again become an unrestricted free agent and send NBA Twitter into a frenzy. He has a player option for the 2021-22 season, but he could decline that option in order to sign a new contract. The most likely scenario is Leonard reaching some sort of agreement with Los Angeles as he continues to recover from an ACL injury he suffered during the 2021 playoffs, though no one truly knows what he will do.
Beyond Leonard, this year's class of free agents is filled with talented point guards who should earn big paydays, including Chris Paul, Kyle Lowry and Mike Conley. There are a few general managers with cap space that will be trying to pry those guys away from their current teams and elevate their franchises.
2021 NBA Draft live stream: How to watch, start time, TV channel, latest mock, draft pick order
The 2021 NBA Draft is set for Thursday nightThe first order of business is the 2021 NBA Draft, which is set for Thursday night. Unlike last year, when the event had to be conducted virtually because of COVID-19, this year's edition will get back to normal. Fans will be allowed inside Barclays Center in Brooklyn, which will once again play host.
And don't forget that trade rumors will be lingering in the background. Will the 76ers move Ben Simmons? Will Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard request a trade? As Kevin Garnett once said, "Anything is possible."
Here's everything you need to know ahead of NBA free agency, including the top available players and teams with the most cap space.
When does NBA free agency start?
NBA free agency will kick off on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. ET. Teams can begin negotiating with free agents at that time, though the reality is many of those conversations have already happened.
Most contracts can't officially be signed until Aug. 6 at 12:01 p.m. ET. However, many players will agree to the terms of a contract verbally before putting pen to paper.
Lawmakers can't reconcile weakening the SALT cap with progressive goals
Any effort to weaken or repeal the cap would simply be a pointless giveaway to the rich. Democrats should reject this regressive tax cut that would draw critical resources away from needed public investments. "No SALT, no deal," said Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) and Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.), who are just some of the lawmakers demanding that Congress repeal or weaken the SALT cap in their reconciliation bill, the legislative vehicle that will let Democrats pass their budget agreement without any Republican votes.
