Sport Colorado Rockies game no. 145 thread: Jon Gray vs. Touki Toussaint
Braves look to continue productive homestand in series opener against Rockies
The Braves have been getting the job done and it’s time to keep things rolling in the right direction. While the Rockies still have a very bad road record — one that sees them currently 30 games under .500 away from Coors Field — they actually proved last week that they have the potential to embarrass someone on a road trip. They knocked off the Phillies three times in four games and while us Braves fans are very grateful for their help, it would be great if the Braves took care of business this week and made short work out of the Rockies and did so starting tonight.
After knocking thedown in the Wild Card race with a 3-1 series win, the Rockies will now travel to Atlanta to take on the NL East’s top team in the Braves for a three-game series. The Rockies and Braves are coming off a 2-2 series split at Coors Field Sept. 2-5.
Jon Gray (7-10, 4.18 ERA) will toe the rubber on Tuesday night, making his second start since being placed on the 10-day IL with forearm soreness and his first start of the season vs. the Braves. In his first game back on Sept. 8 against the Giants, Gray pitched five scoreless innings with eight strikeouts, only giving up two hits, one walk, and one HBP in those five innings. At the plate, Gray hit an RBI single and came around to score a run in the fifth inning. In the sixth, he gave up four straight hits, including a three-run homer to Brandon Crawford which bumped Gray from the game.
Six Prospective September Call-Ups Who Could Swing MLB Playoff Races
Contenders like the Giants and Rays have top prospects ready to change the postseason chase. Welcome to The Opener, where every weekday morning you’ll get a fresh, topical column to start your day from one of SI.com’s MLB writers. In past Septembers, MLB teams could call up as many players as they pleased from their 40-man rosters, which served as an opportunity to drastically lengthen benches, bullpens and even the occasional rotation. This season, however, is the first under a new policy that allows for only two more players to be added to each team’s regular 26-man roster.
The Rockies will face RHP Touki Toussaint (3-2, 4.11 ERA). Toussaint missed a big chunk of the season after being placed on the 60-day IL with a right shoulder strain in March. After rehabbing in the minors, he made his MLB season debut on July 20 and has made 10 appearances since. The Rockies matched up well with him on Sept. 2 when they put up five runs (four earned) in three innings, highlighted by a Charlie Blackmon grand slam. Unfortunately, the Braves rallied back for a 6-5 win. One big factor in the three wins vs. the Phillies was the home runs — the Rockies hit eight in the four-game series.
Atlanta (76-66) has a 37-34 at Truist Park, which isn’t as high as most first-place team’s home records, and could give the Rockies (66-78) a chance to improve on their 21-51 road mark.
Temple-Rutgers football game postponed to Saturday due to flooding
The remnants of Hurricane Ida have continued to cause damage throughout portions of the United States and impact sports calendars ahead of Labor Day weekend. © Chris Pedota, NorthJersey.com via Imagn Content Services, LLC SHI Stadium Both the Temple Owls and Rutgers Scarlet Knights football programs confirmed in statements that Thursday's game to be held at Rutgers' SHI Stadium has been postponed to Saturday because of the massive amounts of flooding caused by historic rain in the area on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Kickoff for the contest is scheduled at noon on Saturday.
Fortunately, due to some very nice rookie caddying, at least we know all the Rockies gear should arrive in Atlanta safely.

Bob Stoops issues non-denial when asked about USC rumors .
USC is in the hunt for a new football coach, and Bob Stoops certainly isn’t doing anything to dispel rumors that he might be interested. © BRYAN TERRY via Imagn Content Services, LLC Bob Stoops wouldn't confirm or deny wanting the USC job. Stoops appeared on SiriusXM’s ESPNU Radio on Wednesday and was asked about chatter potentially linking him to the USC job. Stoops admitted he “can’t control rumors” and refused to respond to reports about whether he had been contacted or not. However, he went on to suggest that he would certainly be open to overtures.“I’m enjoying my opportunity to work with Fox.
