Chiefs' Tyrann Mathieu tests positive for COVID-19, could return for Week 1

Chiefs' Tyrann Mathieu tests positive for COVID-19, could return for Week 1 Mathieu is fully vaccinated, which means he could return to team activities without completing an isolation period of at least 10 days if he produces two negative virus tests taken 24 hours apart. McDowell added Mathieu was asymptomatic as of Wednesday afternoon. In a corresponding roster move, Kansas City re-signed wide receiver Marcus Kemp. For now, Mathieu is on track to be available for the regular-season opener against the Cleveland Browns held at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 12.

The Raiders downgraded Denzelle Good from questionable to out Saturday with an ankle injury . Neither Brown nor right tackle Trent Brown will suit up for the regular- season finale in Denver. Sam Young will start at right tackle, with Brandon Parker the backup on both sides. Designated as inactive Sunday, Good was joined by Brown, cornerback Amik Robertson, cornerback Isaiah Johnson, safety Erik Harris, defensive tackle Maurice Hurst and quarterback Nathan Peterman. Good performed admirably throughout 2020 in what was supposed to be a backup role and instead saw him play in 15

Denzelle Good (born March 8, 1991) is an American football offensive guard for the Las Vegas Raiders of the National Football League (NFL).

During his Tuesday press briefing after the Las Vegas Raiders’ thrilling 33-27 home overtime win over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night, coach Jon Gruden told reporters he was worried that some key players could be facing long-term injury issues.

Gruden said defensive end Yannick Ngakoue (hamstring), defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (knee), left guard Denzelle Good (knee) and backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (strained calf) were all potentially facing long injury issues. He said all four players were being examined Tuesday afternoon. Thus, Gruden said he had no definitive answers on any of the players.

Red Sox place right-hander Nick Pivetta on COVID-19 IL as outbreak worsens

Red Sox place right-hander Nick Pivetta on COVID-19 IL as outbreak worsens The Red Sox now have a combination of 12 players and coaches sidelined due to the coronavirus. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts; utility man Enrique Hernandez; second baseman Christian Arroyo; infielder Yairo Munoz; and pitchers Matt Barnes, Hirokazu Sawamura and Martin Perez tested positive for COVID-19, while left-hander Josh Taylor and first-base coach Tom Goodwin are in quarantine as close contacts. Quality control coach Ramon Vazquez has also tested positive for the virus.

Denzelle Good , who has started three times on the right side this season , will make his fourth start this season and first since Oct. 6 against the Chicago Bears, will replace Incognito. Coach Jon Gruden said Friday the Raiders would likely call up a player from the practice squad to be the backup at both guard spots, with Lester Incognito opened on suspension, center Rodney Hudson missed one game with an ankle injury , Gabe Jackson missed the first five games with a knee injury and Trent Brown missed one game with an ankle injury and two more with a pectoral tear before being placed on injured reserve.

Yet, shortly after Gruden spoke, ESPN reported that Good tore his ACL on Monday night and he will be out for the season.

Good left the game in the first quarter. He returned briefly in the second quarter, but departed the game again. Gruden did praise the play of his replacement, Jermaine Eluemunor, saying he was “unbelievable” in Good’s place. Eluemunor was been with the Raiders for just two weeks.

There is a chance left guard Richie Incognito, who has been out for nearly four weeks, can return this week. If that’s the case, second-year player John Simpson would likely replace Good, who has one more season remaining on his contract, on a full-time basis. He was supposed to challenge Good, but it never developed. Now, it appears, it is Simpson’s time. I’m hearing the Raiders are looking to add depth on the line as well.

Union urges NFL to adopt daily COVID-19 testing for vaccinated players

Union urges NFL to adopt daily COVID-19 testing for vaccinated players There’s a decent chance that the COVID-19 pandemic will play more of a role during the 2021 NFL season than last year. We’re seeing relaxed protocols from the league as it relates to fully vaccinated players with Week 1 of the campaign slated to get going Thursday evening. It has already led to some COVID-related issues for teams. That includes star guard Zack Martin and the Dallas Cowboys with their opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers mere days away. Despite being fully vaccinated, Martin tested positive for the virus and will miss the game.NFLPA president JC Tretter of the Cleveland Browns touched on this recently.

At one point in his presser Tuesday, Gruden said the team will miss McCoy’s leadership. He was taken off the field on a cart. McCoy, 33, was signed last month to provide key depth at defensive tackle. He missed all of last season with a leg injury.

Here is another sign the McCoy injury is significant. The are reportedly signing defensive tackle Damion Square off the Chicago Bears’ practice squad. Square, 32, was with the Chargers and Raiders’ defensive coordinator Gus Bradley the past four seasons. He started one game last year.

Ngakoue finished the game Monday night on the sideline and it didn’t look like he was ever close to coming back into the game. Ngakoue, the team’s free-agent prize, played well Monday before the injury.

Mariota re-injured a training-camp injury on a 31-yard run on the first drive. Gruden said Mariota would have been part of the offensive package throughout the game had he not been hurt,.

Gruden also said third-year defensive end Clelin Ferrell may be active this week against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Gruden did say Ferrell had a back injury, but he was not on the final injury report in Week 1. If Ngakoue is out, Ferrell will very likely be back in the mix.

Opinion: Derek Carr is driving the Raiders' bus and showing an early MVP vibe .
Raiders QB Derek Carr has provided the glue for a lot of silver-and-black grit so far this season. He did it again with a win against the Steelers.Carr, clipped late and from behind by a Steelers defender, didn’t see what he had just accomplished with a 9-yard scoring strike to Foster Moreau. He looked up and saw a crowd of more than a dozen Raiders — players, coaches, trainers — gathered, their faces showing concern.
