MLB goes streaking: Why Orioles’ futility, Yankees’ excellence is the norm in 2021

MLB goes streaking: Why Orioles’ futility, Yankees’ excellence is the norm in 2021 The New York Yankees have won 11 in a row — the star-studded franchise’s longest streak since 1985 — while the moribund Baltimore Orioles just snapped a 19-game losing streak that came dangerously close to the modern record of 23 consecutive defeats set by the 1961 Philadelphia Phillies. If you feel like the fortunes of MLB teams have been snowballing — for better or worse — more often in 2021, you’re not wrong. This season has produced five different winning streaks of 10 or more games, the most since 2017 had six. It has also produced a mind-boggling nine losing streaks of 10 games or more, already the most of any season since at least integration in 1947.

We've seen players get ejected from baseball games. But until Wednesday night in Baltimore, it's hard to fathom anyone had ever seen an entire grounds crew be ejected by an umpire . That's exactly what happened at Camden Yards during a Yankees- Orioles contest threatened by inclement weather.

In baseball , the umpire is the person charged with officiating the game, including beginning and ending the game, enforcing the rules of the game and the grounds , making judgment calls on plays

The Baltimore Orioles’ grounds crew at Camden Yards was getting ready to prepare for a rain delay on Wednesday night, but umpire Tim Timmons wasn’t having any of it.

When the grounds crew was preparing to roll out the tarp, Timmons  kicked them off the field. One pitcher later, a downpour arrived, of course. It’s almost like the grounds crew knew that was going to happen!

With this game in the ninth inning, Timmons was clearly very intent on finishing it, rather than risk a lengthy rain delay.

After the grounds crew incident, the Yankees scored two runs in the ninth and won 4-3. And right when the game concluded, the grounds crew returned to bring out the tarp.

How the overachieving Giants skipped a full rebuild and found success this season .
The Giants have been the best team in baseball after pretty low expectationsThis time around, in the present, it wasn't a shock. Had we gone back and bet on it in March, however? That's a whole different story. Had we polled the entire baseball world -- fans, players, media, front offices ... basically anyone in the world who cares about Major League Baseball -- the list of teams higher on the list of "who will be the first team to 100 wins this season?" would have been robust.
