Boston 's magic number entering Monday's action is a whopping 17, quite high given where we are in the regular season. This is because, for all of the Yankees' faults and Boston 's second-half strengths combined, the Red Sox have just not been able to widen the gap. It's as though the AL East race is the famed James Bond film Goldeneye, with Boston playing the role of supervillain Alec Trevelyan (Sorry, Red Sox fans!) and New York being 007. Why can't the Yankees just be a good team and lose?? The good news for Boston is that of their remaining games, two are against last place teams in the

The Boston Red Sox are nearing a playoff berth, and could very well host the American League Wild Card Game.

The Sox and their yellow jerseys field a strong team down the stretch. With Chris Sale coming back successfully from Tommy John, and Nathan Eovaldi pitching well enough to potentially start the Wild Card Game, Boston should scare just about any team they go up against.

Still, the Red Sox cannot officially clinch a playoff spot until their magic number is reached. But, what is a magic number? And how long do Red Sox fans have before they have something to celebrate?

Boston Red Sox magic number: 7

Our own Aryanna Prasad sums up the magic number formula quite well:

The Boston Red Sox celebrate a 10-7 win against the Toronto Blue Jays at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. (Winslow Townson | USA TODAY Sports). They probably will be because, despite a late run, the Boston Red Sox are still in good shape to hold off the Yankees for the AL East championship. After gaining a game on the Red Sox two days in a row, the Yankees didn't pick up any ground on Wednesday when they beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1 and Boston beat Toronto 10-7 to salvage the final game of a three-game series against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park.

"The magic number is calculated by taking an entire season of games, then adding one for a total of 163. Then, the wins of the Red Sox are subtracted, as are the losses of the secondary team.

The formula looks like this:

163 – (Division leader wins + Division runner-up losses)"

The Red Sox magic number is currently seven over the Toronto Blue Jays, and eight for the New York Yankees. That means, as things currently stand, their magic number to clinch the top Wild Card spot is eight, and a playoff spot in general is seven.
