Yankees activate 1B Anthony Rizzo, closer Aroldis Chapman

Yankees activate 1B Anthony Rizzo, closer Aroldis Chapman Anthony Rizzo has been activated from the COVID-19 injured list. Additionally, closer Aroldis Chapman is back from the 10-day IL. To create space for Rizzo on the 40-man roster, New York activated outfielder Trey Amburgey from the 10-day IL and returned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

DJ LeMahieu ’s Yankees misery gets even worse. DJ LeMahieu ’s inability to get to a shallow pop-up in right field off the bat of pinch-hitter Christian Arroyo contributed to the Red Sox completing the sweep in The Bronx with a come-from-behind 6-5, 10-inning victory in front of 19,103 at the Stadium. LeMahieu also had a chance to pull the Yankees even in the 10th, but grounded out to complete his miserable night.

Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu , their consensus MVP so far, was out of the lineup for Saturday ’s game with the Red Sox at Fenway Park. The problem: Groin tightness. Boone said LeMahieu felt “OK” on Saturday , but that the team didn’t want to push him. Gio Urshela will likely remain in the lineup in LeMahieu ’s absence. Gleyber Torres was set to start at second base. Urshela has been a revalation for the Yankees , hitting .295 with 10 bombs and 46 RBI in 84 games while also playing spectacular defense with expected stater Miguel Andujar sidelined for the season with a right shoulder labrum tear.

New York Yankees infielder DJ LeMahieu has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox with a hip/groin issue, manager Aaron Boone told reporters, including SNY's Ryan Morik.

"Last night [it] was kind of holding him back a little bit. He's pretty beat up after last night's game. Hopefully something that the day will help him out and be back in there," Boone said.

Boone added LeMahieu has been dealing with the issue for the "last couple weeks." With the 33-year-old out, the Yankees are starting Rougned Odor at shortstop.

DJ Lemahieu left Saturday ’s 11-5 victory over the reeling Red Sox with a sprained left thumb suffered on an awkward swing. On Saturday , they belted three homers, including one from Gary Sancez, who has homered in three straight games — and another from Clint Frazier. Frazier has been on fire in three games since being recalled from the alternate site in Scranton. He’s 7-for-11 with five extra-base hits, and he added five RBIs on Saturday , highlighting the Yankees ’ eighth win in a row over Boston, who have the worst record in the AL.

DJ LeMahieu , who has a sprained left thumb, is joining Yankees stars Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list. Hours after Boone's pregame media availability, Mike Ford, who figures to receive some extra playing time, drove in three runs as the Yankees beat Boston 4-2 Sunday night for their ninth straight victory over the Red Sox . Ford put New York ahead when he dumped an RBI single into short center field in the first inning, then gave the Yankees a 4-1 lead with a two-run homer off Chris Mazza in the third.

LeMahieu is having a solid season for the Bronx Bombers, hitting .268/.349/.363 with 10 home runs and 56 RBI in 146 games.

New York won the first game of this weekend's series against Boston 8-3 behind a six-strikeout performance from ace Gerrit Cole. The Yankees are 87-67, third in the AL East, one game behind the Red Sox for the top wild-card spot.

Yankees planning to activate Luis Severino this week

Yankees planning to activate Luis Severino this week Luis Severino’s return finally seems imminent, as Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the team hopes to activate Severino from the injured list within the next few days.  Severino will be used out of the bullpen, possibly pitching up to three innings at a time as a long man. It has been a long road back for Severino, who hasn’t pitched in a Major League game since Game 3 of the 2019 ALCS.

Move to Friday night when the Yankees host the Red Sox in the first of four games and it’s quite possible DJ LeMahieu , whose .332 batting average topped the AL entering Thursday night’s action, will see the bulk of playing time at first base. The Yankees have Edwin Encarnacion to play first base but LeMahieu , a three-time Gold Glove second baseman, provides better defense at first than Encarnacion. Even before Voit went down the Yankees ’ best defensive infield had LeMahieu at first. LeMahieu hasn’t played since July 26 due to a groin problem but is expected to return Friday night.

AL batting leader DJ LeMahieu is out of the New York Yankees ' lineup for Saturday 's game against the Boston Red Sox . Manager Aaron Boone says ''he's got a little tightness in his groin ,'' which the infielder felt during Friday's loss to the Red Sox .
