Sport MLB Network broadcaster Jim Kaat apologizes for 'sensitive, hurtful remark' directed at Yoán Moncada
Do Mets have a shot at landing ‘Moneyball’ star Billy Beane?
It sounds like an opportunity Beane would consider, but it’s definitely not a done deal. Beane would be ideal for the Mets, who have had to deal with extensive front office turmoil all year. After a terrible end to the year, it would also be a big sign that the organization is moving in the right direction.Subscribe to Yardbarker's Morning Bark, the most comprehensive newsletter in sports. MLB Network broadcaster Jim Kaat apologized Friday after making a "sensitive, hurtful remark" about Chicago White Sox third baseman Yoán Moncada.
The comment occurred in the first inning of the contest. With Moncada at the plate, Kaat and booth mate Buck Showalter discussed Moncada's ability. Showalter jokingly said he asked, "Can we have one of those" the first time he saw Moncada. Kaat responded by saying, "Get a 40-acre field full of them."
Hey— Dan Ewen Ⓥ (@VaguelyFunnyDan) can we maybe talk about this "Get a 40 acre field full of 'em" comment by the announcer?
Kaat addressed that comment in the fifth inning of the game. During a meeting on the mound, Kaat apologized for his "sensitive, hurtful" comment.
As MLB brings 'Field of Dreams' to life: Here's 6 other iconic venues we want to see a game
What if sporting events were played at sites made famous on the big screen? Here's a few ideas: Boxing at the Colosseum Commodus may not appear in the emperor's chair to give a thumbs-up or thumbs-down like he did in "Gladiator," but this would still be an iconic place for two fighters to face each other in the ring. It would prove tough to strengthen the infrastructure to seat thousands of people and construct a sturdy ring, all while preserving thousands of years of history. But the spectacle (imagine Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor-level hype) would be worth it.
"I want to add a little break here. In fact, I need to read this right now, because earlier in the game when Yoan Moncada was at the plate in an attempt to compliment the great player, I used a poor choice of words that resulted in a sensitive, hurtful remark. And I'm sorry."
Bob Costas and Showalter went silent for a few seconds before an ad for Evan Williams bourbon played on the screen. When the ad ended, Kaat resumed analyzing the game.
Former Diamondbacks Ildemaro Vargas, Chris Devenski elect free agency .
Vargas received 211 plate appearances while playing in 92 games with Arizona in 2019, hitting .269/.299/.413. He hasn’t matched even that modest production since, posting only a .477 OPS over 137 total PA in 2020-21.Devenski signed a minor-league contract with the D-backs last winter and made it to their big league roster, but delivered only an 8.59 ERA over 7 1/3 relief innings. A tough season got worse due to Tommy John surgery around early June, and Devenski will now be sidelined until at least (in a best-case scenario) the 2022 All-Star break.
