Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez on roster for ALDS vs. Rays

Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez on roster for ALDS vs. Rays Martinez suffered somewhat of a freak sprained left ankle in this past Sunday's regular-season finale at the Washington Nationals when he tripped on second base while running out to patrol right field. He was playing in the outfield because Boston was the road team and National League clubs don't use the designated hitter for home games. The AP added Boston used Martinez as a DH for 113 contests during the campaign. Depending on his health and what else occurs throughout October, Martinez may not be asked to play the field again until the World Series. The 34-year-old slashed .286/.349/.

The Dutch continued their domination of men ' s track sprinting as Roy van den Berg, Jeffrey Hoogland and Harrie Lavreysen crushed hosts France in the team final to win the gold for a fourth straight year. It was the same Dutch trio who ended Britain's Olympic reign in the event earlier this year in Tokyo. France edged out the Russians to seal their second medal. The other final on the championships' opening day saw Italy's Martina Fidanza take gold in the women ' s scratch race, with Dutchwoman Maike van der Duin and the USA's Jennifer Valente completing the podium.

Germany is also the only nation to have won both the women ' s and men ' s tournament. The team has won eight of the twelve UEFA European Championships, claiming six consecutive titles between 1995 and 2013. Birgit Prinz holds the record for most appearances and is the team 's all-time leading goalscorer. Prinz has also set international records ; she has received the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times and is the joint second overall top goalscorer at the Women ' s World Cup.

Germany set a new world record in the three-rider women's team sprint final at the track cycling world championships on Wednesday, while the Netherlands added the men's title to their Olympic gold medal.

Blue Jays deny Mets' request to interview Mark Shapiro .
Blue Jays ownership recently denied the Mets’ request to interview Toronto president/CEO Mark Shapiro as part of New York’s ongoing front office search.A Shapiro pursuit would’ve always been a longshot, not too dissimilar from New York’s earlier unsuccessful runs at A’s executive vice president Billy Beane and Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns. Shapiro has paired with general manager Ross Atkins to run baseball operations for the Jays since 2015, and he inked a five-year contract extension this January.
