What is a bomb cyclone?

A "bomb cyclone" is a type of weather system that comes from a process known as "bombogenesis." Below is the National Ocean Service's explanation of what bombogenesis is.

San Francisco ’s losses are by a combined 16 points, with the defense allowing 297 yards and 25 points per game . It’s the little things, specifically holding onto the ball. The 49 ers are minus-4 in turnover margin the past three games . But oddsmakers still like the home team here, having San Francisco open as four-point favorites against the Colts . A bomb cyclone weather event is expected to affect the Colts – 49 ers game . The bomb cyclone will bring heavy rains, flash flooding and mudslides from burn scars in California.

Bombogenesis occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, dropping at least 24 millibars over 24 hours. A millibar measures atmospheric pressure. This can happen when a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass, such as air over warm ocean waters. The formation of this rapidly strengthening weather system is a process called bombogenesis, which creates what is known as a bomb cyclone.

Simply put, a bomb cyclone is a storm that strengthens in intensity very quickly because of a drop in atmospheric pressure. That's what the 49ers and Colts will be dealing with as they square off in Santa Clara, Calif. on Sunday night.

49ERS VS. COLTS: Odds, trends, prediction for SNF matchup

How have the 49ers, Colts prepared for the bomb cyclone?

The Colts took a traditional approach to their preparation for the stormy conditions on Sunday night. Frank Reich explained that they did a lot of the "wet-ball drill" at practice.

“We’ve gotten good work — a lot of wet-ball drill. We had a perfect day yesterday for practice, it was pretty breezy. Then it rained today for practice,” Reich said, per Yahoo Sports. “Now, I understand what they are calling for could be a lot worse than what we saw yesterday and today, but I think the guys have worked hard. The players have really done a lot with the wet ball this whole week, not just one day. We’re as prepared as we can be.”

The 49ers have taken a similar approach to Reich's Colts. They practiced with wet balls on Friday so quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo could figure out what type of gloves and equipment he would use during Sunday's game.

"Jimmy [Garoppolo] wanted to try it out and work some different gloves and stuff to see," Shanahan said, per ProFootballTalk. "Nate [Sudfeld] gave him some ideas on some things that he’s used and they tried that out. So, it seemed like they enjoyed it, but that stuff, really just for the quarterbacks, they can change a couple things, but that’s all up to them and that stuff’s all different. Everyone else, you deal with it and you see what type of game it is. You see who’s staying in the ground the best, who your best mudders are and you figure that out as the game goes and you lean on them."

Both teams figure to rely heavily on these "mudders" to get them through the game. Both teams are strong rushing teams, so each could ride their running attack and throw sparingly. The 49ers will utilize Elijah Mitchell, Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty while the Colts can rely on Jonathan Taylor, Nyheim Hines and Marlon Mack.
