Coming off their first consecutive losses of the season, the Cowboys hoped to settle into preparation for a Thursday visit to New Orleans.

Instead, a rash of COVID-19 cases has disrupted their scheduling and personnel availability.

The Cowboys will be without starting right tackle Terence Steele against the Saints after he tested positive for COVID-19, head coach Mike McCarthy announced Sunday morning.

Devin Nunes of California, the ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, sent a letter to Wray giving the bureau chief a heads up on some of what he planned to ask him during a closed-door intelligence briefing scheduled for Wednesday.

They’ll also miss several coaches due to positive COVID-19 tests. In addition to offensive line coach Joe Philbin, who tested positive before the Cowboys’ Thanksgiving loss to the Raiders, at least three more coaches are now unavailable.

Assistant offensive line coach Jeff Blasko, offensive assistant Scott Tolzien and strength and conditioning coordinator Harold Nash entered COVID-19 protocol this weekend. Strength and conditioning staff assistants Kendall Smith and Cedric Smith were already in protocol.

“We’re in a cycle right now,” Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said on a Sunday morning conference call with local reporters. “We’re paying close attention to it.”

The Cowboys shifted their meetings to virtual formats for Sunday, the only in-person gathering to be a roughly 75-minute walkthrough practice. Monday will be subject to the same format of roughly three hours meeting virtually followed by a walkthrough practice, Tuesday outlines pending test results. All players and coaches, regardless of vaccination status, will undergo COVID-19 testing Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

The many Russian links to the operatives behind the Steele dossier

The many Russian links to the operatives behind the Steele dossier The Russian links to the figures behind Christopher Steele’s discredited dossier have come into clearer focus following special counsel John Durham’s indictments. © Provided by Washington Examiner Steele was working for Vladimir Putin-linked oligarch Oleg Deripaska before, during, and after his time targeting then-candidate Donald Trump, and the former MI6 agent was hired to put the dossier together by an opposition research firm, Fusion GPS, which was simultaneously working for Kremlin-linked lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya of the now-infamous June 2016 Trump Tower meeting.

Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper, who is unvaccinated, had tested positive for COVID-19 on Nov. 19 and subsequently missed the Cowboys’ losses to the Chiefs and Raiders last week. He is scheduled to return to the Star on Monday from his 10-day quarantine. The Cowboys will assess his conditioning then determine a game plan for Thursday’s contest against New Orleans.

The Cowboys have missed both their top receivers for their last three halves of football after second-year receiver CeeDee Lamb sustained a concussion late in the second quarter at Kansas City, when he hit his head hard on the ground of the end zone in a failed touchdown attempt.

Lamb practiced last week but didn’t clear testing from an independent neurologist. He will practice and participate fully Sunday, McCarthy said.

At 7-4, the Cowboys entered Sunday in a two-game lead atop the NFC East, but the gap has narrowed with Dallas’ three losses in the last four weeks. The Cowboys will play three straight division games after this New Orleans trip: at Washington, at the Giants and vs. Washington.

NFL roundtable: Which teams could make surprise playoff runs?

NFL roundtable: Which teams could make surprise playoff runs? The NFL's contenders should be on high alert after a string of upsets in recent weeks, and these teams could surprise in the postseason. In the last three weeks, there have been 11 victories by .500-or-lower teams against current division leaders. That figure represents the most throughout the league for that timespan for any year since 1970. And should that dynamic continue into the final weeks and postseason, the parity could leave the door open for an unlikely candidate to make a surprise playoff run.

Cowboys offensive quality control coach Chase Haslett and tight ends coach Lunda Wells will help assume coaching staff responsibilities leading up to and at New Orleans. Offensive consultant Ben McAdoo, a former Giants head coach, will pitch in as well.

Veteran La’el Collins, the starter before Steele supplanted him this season, is expected to start at right tackle.
