There has been some anecdotal debate about Lionel Messi winning the latest Ballon D’Or in 2021. Many sports critics said that Robert Lewandowski was the one who deserved the distinction far better. Whether this is true or not is up to soccer critics to decide, but the fact is that determining who is better at soccer servers a greater purpose.

For one, it helps set the correct soccer odds 1x2. Ballon D’Or has always distinguished top athletes from the world of soccer, that is a fact, but sometimes the way the distinction has been awarded has come under fire. The case of Messi versus Lewandowski is quite similar, as Lewandowski took his teams above and beyond whereas Messi is only now trying to contribute to Paris Saint-Germain, a team where many players (who are arguably as talented as he is) play.

So, is Ballon D’Or about who truly deserves it the most or is it a bit of a public perception and perhaps just a tad of PR stunt? After all, Messi has seven of these distinctions to his name. But it’s not just about prejudice against one soccer player or another. The journalists on the soccer panel are completely independent, giving objectivity to the final judgement.

Understandably, defining skill and finesse in soccer is also a bit of a personal matter. For better or for worse, this type of subjectivity is what drives the game forward. Fans do recognize certain soccer players better than others and naturally, soccer bodies will usually lean a little harder on these more recognizable soccer names in the sport as they are better for marketing.

However, this is not always true, and when it comes to Ballon D’Or, you can rest assured that a panel of professionals is sitting in to determine who is deserving and who is not – with a small caveat that is.

Ballon d'Salt for Robert Lewandowski in lieu of Ballon d'Or: How a city in Poland is rectifying "injustice" .
Robert Lewandowski's compatriots feel that their Poland national team captain deserved the Ballon d'Or, and so one city will design a White Golden Ball in lieu of the real thing. The award, initially proposed as a joke but now expected to actually be presented, is meant to recognize the Polish international as the best player in the world this year after he finished second to Lionel Messi in Ballon d'Or voting.
