Chicago's misfortune ahead of the weekend began when ace right-hander Lucas Giolito exited the Opening Day clash after just four innings of work in what became a 5-4 defeat due to reported abdominal tightness in his left side.

Manager Tony La Russa spoke with reporters after the game and said the 27-year-old was still undergoing evaluation at that time.

"When he came back for the fifth, he just felt a little tug in there," La Russa explained about Giolito's setback, per Alex Shapiro of NBC Sports Chicago. "I’m concerned because knowing him, he wouldn’t come out unless you drag him out of there. So, I’m concerned because he felt something. He was smart to not go back out there, because who knows what else is going to happen."

Giolito, who went 11-9 with a 3.53 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 201 strikeouts in 178.2 innings during the 2021 season, is meant to carry the Chicago rotation with Lance Lynn sidelined for about a month with a knee injury.

Things went from bad to worse for the White Sox in the game's ninth inning, as Detroit's Eric Haase tied the contest at 4-4 with a solo home run before Javier Baez delivered a walk-off single that was first incorrectly called an out.

Chicago plays at Detroit again on Saturday afternoon.
