WNBA star Brittney Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison this Thursday. This conclusion to her Russian trial was expected, but it still sent shockwaves through the sports world.

Shortly after Griner's sentence was announced, ESPN's Robert Griffin posted a four-word message on Twitter.

"BRING BRITTNEY GRINER HOME," Griffin tweeted.

Even though Griner was sentenced to nine years in prison, there's still a path for her to return to the United States.

Brittney Griner Wishes Wife Cherelle 'Good Luck on the Bar Exam' from Russian Court

Brittney Griner Wishes Wife Cherelle 'Good Luck on the Bar Exam' from Russian Court Griner's wife, Cherelle, recently graduated from North Carolina Central University School of Law in May. Cherelle started the intensive, two-day exam to become a practicing lawyer Tuesday. Griner told ABC News that she is "waiting patiently" while in custody but has "no complaints." During the hearing, she held up a sign that included a photograph of her and Cherelle. The Phoenix Mercury center was arrested at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport in February after officials allegedly found vape cartridges containing hash oil, an illegal substance in Russia, in her luggage.

President Joe Biden has already called on Russia to release Griner.

"Today, American citizen Brittney Griner received a prison sentence that is one more reminder of what the world already knew: Russia is wrongfully detaining Brittney," Biden said. "It's unacceptable, and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends, and teammates."

It's possible Russia and the United States work on a prisoner swap in the coming weeks.

Last week, it was reported that America could trade convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan.

Blinken says U.S. made offer to Russia for release of Brittney Griner, Paul Whelan .
The secretary of state said securing the Americans' release remains a "top priority" for the U.S."In the coming days, I expect to speak with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov for the first time since the war began," Blinken said. "I plan to raise an issue that's a top priority for us: the release of Americans Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner, who have been wrongfully detained and must be allowed to come home. We put a substantial proposal on the table weeks ago to facilitate their release. Our governments have communicated repeatedly and directly on that proposal.
