LiAngelo Ball to come off bench during UCLA’s exhibition vs. Cal State LA LiAngelo Ball is an entirely different player than his older brother Lonzo Ball, in terms of both on-court style and NCAA starting point. Where Zo started every game of his freshman year, Gelo is likely to make his UCLA Bruins debut off the bench during Wednesday's exhibition against Cal State Los Angeles-LaVar Ball and Tina Ball's alma mater-at Pauley Pavilion.

KU’s decision Tuesday night to not dress Preston for the team’s Champions Classic game against Kentucky appears to be part of the new normal in college basketball.

"On Saturday, Billy was involved in a single-vehicle accident on campus," coach Bill Self said in a statement released on Twitter. "There were no injuries, but Billy’s car sustained damage. After I learned about the incident, I reported it to our administration. The administration determined that we needed a clearer financial picture specific to the vehicle. We decided to hold him out of tonight’s game and will continue to do that until the review is complete."

UNC raises money for charity with 4-team hoops jamboree North Carolina coach Roy Williams wanted to raise money to help his home state rebuild from a hurricane. He also welcomed the chance to give his defending national champions a taste of Division I competition with the regular season starting later this week. So he invited a few friends - and their teams - to spend a low-stress afternoon back in Chapel Hill.Call it a hoops homecoming for hurricane relief, with three coaches with strong Carolina ties returning to the Smith Center. The ninth-ranked Tar Heels brought in UNC Wilmington, UNC Greensboro and East Carolina for a round-robin jamboree of scrimmages.

DeCOURCY: Coach K advocates for big changes in sport

That KU chose to be so comparatively open regarding the action against Preston would seem to be a product of the current climate in college basketball. Simply put, if Kansas was concerned anyone associated with the school had committed an NCAA violation, it likely would have remained silent publicly and eventually reported its concern to the enforcement division.

If KU's concern is more related to an outside party — an agent, perhaps, or someone in that area — it might be more willing to speak in this fashion.

Preston is a 6-10, 220-pound forward who played last season at top prep school Oak Hill Academy in Virginia and is originally from Santa Ana, Calif. He was rated the consensus No. 19 prospect in the recruiting class of 2017 and had been expected to contend for a starting job. Self described him as "disappointed and crushed" to learn he would not face Kentucky.

Preston didn't play in KU's opener against Tennessee State because he missed curfew and then a class the following day, but it wasn't totally unrelated to that mysterious automobile.

"Last night curfew was 10 p.m., and we fed them and everything,” Self told the Daily Kansas on Friday. "Then he missed class today because he had to go get his car because when he got in last night after curfew, he had to park it illegally."
