  Opening statements begin in Atlanta attorney's murder trial Opening statements are underway in the trial of an Atlanta lawyer charged with murder in the shooting death of his business executive wife. Prosecutors have said 75-year-old Claud "Tex" McIver intentionally killed 64-year-old Diane McIver in September 2016. Defense attorneys have said the shooting was a tragic accident.McIver faces charges including murder and influencing witnesses.Tex McIver was a partner at a prominent law firm and vice chair of the state election board. Diane McIver was president of U.S. Enterprises Inc., the parent company of Corey Airport Services, where she had worked for 43 years.

The attack also impacted the city's emergency-response services - forcing dispatchers answering 911 calls to take down reports with a paper and pen. "The City of Atlanta has experienced a ransomware cyberattack," confirmed chief operating officer Richard Cobbs during the briefing.

The city of Atlanta , Georgia was the subject of a massive cyberattack which began in March 2018. The city recognized the attack on Thursday, March 22, 2018, and publicly acknowledged it was a ransomware attack .

ATLANTA -- City officials say Atlanta is dealing with a cyberattack that is holding internal systems hostage using ransomware, CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reports. The attack caused outages on several computer systems. 

According to WGCL-TV, a ransom note demanding payment in the cryptocurrency bitcoin was discovered Thursday morning. The letter states that all files had been encrypted, and require a key to regain access.   

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms tells CBS News the city is receiving assistance from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, Microsoft and Cisco Security.

ATLANTA -- City officials say Atlanta is dealing with a cyberattack that is holding internal systems hostage using ransomware , CBS affiliate WGCL-TV reports. Around 5 a.m., a written communication from the hackers warned that they had frozen the city's computer systems, CBS News homeland

City sent a tweet in response to the incident, which reads in part: "The City of Atlanta is currently experiencing outages on various customer-facing applications, including some that customers may use to pay bills or access court-related information."

It remains unclear whether personal information had been compromised. 

A massive cyberattack in May 2017 crippled computer systems in more than 150 countries around the world. Known as the WannaCry attack, the criminals demanded payment in order to unlock encrypted files. The attack used a tool developed by the National Security Agency that exploited a vulnerability in older Windows systems that had since been patched.

The White House blamed North Korea for the WannaCry attack.
