About 50 people participated in the protest on the two-year anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting that killed 49 people.

Michael Pincus, a local high school student who helped organize the event, told the Palm Beach Post that the protest was a way to hold politicians to their word on gun control.

"It's a little morbid," Pincus said. "But its a way of holding officials accountable."

Participants, which included students and parents from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, lay on the ground for 12 minutes to represent the statistic that someone dies of gun violence every 12 minutes, worldwide, activists told the Broward County Sun-Sentinel.

The protest was held on a street in view of Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private beach resort, which he has dubbed the "Winter White House."

At the time of the Pulse shooting, then-candidate Trump panned "political correctness" that he said made terrorist attacks more likely, and also said that the shooting would have been less deadly if clubgoers had had guns.

Gun control activists have been highly critical of Trump and the GOP in the wake of the Parkland shooting in February over lack of support for gun-control laws.

Trump has called for stronger school safety measures, and suggested arming teachers as a way to combat school shootings.
