MERIDEN — Two people are expected to survive after a small plane they were in crashed on the baseball field of a city high school on Thursday.

A statement from the Federal Aviation Administration said a Piper PA-28 plane crashed on the H.C. Wilcox Technical High School baseball field at 6:55 p.m. The school is on Oregon Road.

There were athletes on the baseball field in the afternoon, a few hours before the plane crashed, Scarpati said. He said a tennis match, set to take place on the school’s tennis court on the far side of the baseball field, was moved to a different location around 10 a.m.

“No students were on premises when this occurred, no students were on the field,” he said.

FAA officials said the agency will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause of the crash.

Sgt. Christopher Fry said during a press conference late Thursday that the 50-year-old pilot appeared to be practicing landings and taking off when he struck a high tension wire and crash landed in the outfield of a baseball field at Wilcox Technical High School.

The plane clipped the wire which landed on another wire causing a short that took out power to much of the city, Fry said. About a dozen Eversource employees showed up quickly, Fry said. Power was back on as of this morning.

The Connecticut State Police said in a statement on Friday that the passenger was taken to Hartford Hospital via Lifestar and the pilot was taken to Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury by ambulance. According to reports from Eversource Energy, which supplies power to 28,192 customers in Meriden, more than 40 percent — 13,366 — of those customers were without power as of 7:20 p.m. By 5 a.m. Friday, Eversource reported no power outages.

Scarpati praised the first responders who handled the crash and Eversource crews that worked quickly to restore power to residents.

“This isn’t something they can do with their normal trucks and crews,” he said. “They had to call in for different equipment.”
