A teenage girl bitten by a shark in North Carolina is resting after having surgery on Tuesday, but her family says her road to recovery is long. "We are pleased to share that Paige is resting well after returning to the operating room at Vidant Medical Center on June 4, 2019. While we understand she will require additional operations, our Paige is a fighter. Her courageous spirit continues to be a beacon of light for all of us," the family of Paige Winter said in a statement. The 17-year-old was attacked by a shark at Fort Macon State Park near Atlantic Beach on Sunday.

I went straight to where the pink was and I dove under and I grabbed her. When I pulled her up a shark came up with her — it was a big shark and I immediately started to hit it. I hit it with everything I could and it let go."

A teen seriously injured after being hit by a train that left her best friend dead is making progress in recovery. Police said two teens were on the Pope Lick train trestle on Taylorsville Road when a train approached. Savannah Bright, 15, and her friend, were unable to get off the tracks before it reached them, and both were hit. Bright died at the scene, police said. She was a sophomore at Seneca High School, according a spokesperson with Jefferson County Public Schools. The other teen, identified by family as Kaylee Keeling, 16, was taken to a hospital. Keeling's grandmother, Patty Crume, said she had to use a ventilator and had swelling and bleeding on the brain.

But Paige was the real fighter. Both her hands were mauled trying to pry open the shark's jaws. Her left leg had to be amputated, thigh-high.
Unprovoked shark attacks like this are rare. There were 66 of them worldwide last year, and four fatalities. But even more rare is Paige's attitude: no screaming, no crying and no self-pity.
"I want people to see I'm doing alright and you know, I'm still going to do the stuff they can do. I think I can transform this into something good for me, good for sharks and good for the environment too," she said.
Paige's father said he "couldn't be prouder."
"The shark took her leg. It did not take her spirit," he said.
