Trial begins over insurance for 'suspicious' boat sinking A civil trial getting underway in Providence will determine whether insurance companies should cover Nathan Carman's $85,000 claim for his boat that sank off New England in 2016. Insurers are refusing to pay the claim, saying Carman made suspicious alterations to the 31-foot vessel before leaving Rhode Island with his mother on a fishing trip. Carman, who lives in Vermont, was found eight days later in a life raft near Martha's Vineyard. Linda Carman is presumed dead. The federal judge hearing the non-jury trial that began on Tuesday says testimony will be limited to questions surrounding the insurance claim.

Police have reportedly shut down the 14th Street bridge in Washington D.C. in both directions after a package reportedly fell from a truck. The 14th Street Bridge was closed in both directions Thursday afternoon as police investigated a suspicious package .

The upper level of the George Washington Bridge was shut down in both directions due to a suspicious device Thursday night, authorities said.

"A suspicious package on the upper level of the bridge is currently under investigation. At this time the upper level, eastbound and westbound, is currently closed," said a Port Authority spokesperson on Thursday night.

The lower level of the George Washington Bridge reopened just before 11 p.m., the Port Authority said in a tweet.
