Late Night At Work Blamed For Deadly Crash In Monroe

Late Night At Work Blamed For Deadly Crash In Monroe MONROE (WWJ) - A late night at work is being blamed for a deadly crash in Monroe. The crash happened around 6:45 a.m. Wednesday on North Custer Road across from Ruff Drive, west of Telegraph. Officers arrived to find an older model Dodge Ram pickup truck had collided head-on with a tree near the River Walk along the River Raisin. The driver, a 40-year-old man, was alive but unresponsive and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was transported to a local hospital where he died during surgery. Police say driver fatigue is believed to be a contributing factor of the crash, as the man had just ended his midnight shift and had worked the day prior.

"I had to sit there and watch my two babies die," the groom's mother, LaShawna Morgan, told The Beaumont Enterprise. "That is an image I will have for the rest of my life. I still have his blood on my hands from trying to pull him and her out of there."

According to the paper, the same judge that had married the couple pronounced them dead at the scene.

KFDM reported that the couple were high school sweethearts and had plans for a bigger ceremony in December.

"The 20th of December is when we were going to have the big ceremony with the flowers, all the friends, rest of the family, everything," Christina Fontenot, the groom's sister, told KFDM.
