All Marines wearing their dress or service uniforms are now allowed to use umbrellas Before the change, only female Marines were allowed to use umbrellas . Marines will still be prohibited from using umbrellas while in their camouflage uniforms , as is the case with other services.

For the first time in its 200-year history, the Marine Corps will allow men to use umbrellas.

The Marines announced the update to its dress requirements on Thursday, stating they were effective immediately. When used while in uniform, umbrellas must be small, all-black standard or collapsible.

Prior to the change, only female Marines were allowed to use umbrellas to shield themselves from the elements. The use of umbrellas was restricted in part because they would hinder members' ability to salute. The stipulation that allowed women to use the umbrellas was that they only be held in the left hand.

In addition to the allowance of umbrellas, female Marines are now allowed to wear gold or silver earrings while in uniform. The jewelry must be small, polished, yellow gold or silver colored, ball or round stud earrings.

They can be post, screw on or clip earrings, but cannot exceed one-quarter of an inch in diameter and can only be worn when women are dressed in service, blue dress and blue-white dress.
