At least five people were killed and scores more injured Sunday in a massive crash that shut down almost 100 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in both directions.

Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha confirmed five deaths and said at least 60 people were rushed to area hospitals. The turnpike was shut down to traffic from New Stanton to Breezewood, an 86-mile stretch, Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo said.

"Crash involves 2 tractor trailers, a tour bus and passenger vehicles," DeFebo said on Twitter. "A prolonged closure likely."

The crash occurred at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday near mile marker 86 on the westbound side of the highway, about 30 miles east of Pittsburgh, DeFebo said. National Transportation Safety Board investigators were called to the scene.

Bacha said the accident involved three commercial vehicles, the coach bus and one passenger vehicle. Photos from the scene show a battered Fedex truck with packages scattered on the highway. An Ohio Coach bus is laying on its side. Ohio Coach runs express bus service to New York from several Ohio cities.

Company officials did not immediately respond to a request for information from USA TODAY.

Mutual Aid EMS reported transporting 60 people to various hospitals. Twenty-five people ranging in age from 7 to 52 were being evaluated at Excela Frick Hospital in Mount Pleasant, Excela Health spokeswoman Robin Jennings told Triblive.com. Nine of the 25 patients were under 18, she said.
