VERO BEACH, Fla. — One person died and several others were injured Wednesday morning after a van driving a Massachusetts college rowing team was involved in a crash. 

Women with the College of the Holly Cross rowing team were traveling to a practice at the Vero Beach Rowing Club when their van was hit by a pickup truck, a police official said.

A 20-year-old woman died, police said at a press conference Wednesday. Her name has not been released.

One of the two team vans collided with a pickup truck near the Barber Bridge in Vero Beach. One person was pronounced dead and 12 others were injured, officials said. Sign up for our Newsletters “Unfortunately, there is one confirmed fatality, and it was a member of the team,” Vero Beach Police Chief David Curry said. "The female was in the frontOne of the two team vans collided with a pickup truck near the Barber Bridge in Vero Beach. One person was pronounced dead and 12 others were injured, officials said.

Vero Beach police Lt. Matt Harrelson said nine people were in the van, including eight team members. 

Several women were taken by helicopters to surrounding hospitals, while the drivers of both vehicles were taken by ambulance to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m.

Vero Beach Rowing Club Director Brian Colgan said the team is in town for a mid-winter training camp. 

In a statement, Holy Cross, based in Worcester, Massachusetts, said, “This morning, members of the Holy Cross women’s rowing team were involved in a serious crash while traveling in Florida.

"The College is in contact with authorities in Florida and is in the process of gathering more information. Holy Cross has been in touch with the families of those students and coaches and is offering support for all those involved.

"We ask that you keep all those involved and their families in your prayers at this time.”
