Florida residents have been stunned to find iguanas falling out of trees, where unusually cold temperatures are causing their bodies to shut down.

Temperatures dipped below 40 degrees Fahrenheit early Thursday in parts of South Florida , according to the National Weather Service in Miami. Green iguanas are an invasive species in Florida known for eating through landscaping and digging burrows that undermine infrastructure.

As the NWS forecast office in Miami reminded Floridians, “Iguanas are cold blooded. They slow down or become immobile when temps drop into the 40s. They may fall from trees, but they are not dead.”

Experts warn that most of these lizards, which are not native to Florida, will recover, and do not recommend collecting them.
