US Pentagon inks $134M deal to buy PPE for nursing homes
Freedom! In France, a nursing home takes on COVID and wins
LYON, France (AP) — As the coronavirus scythed through nursing homes, cutting a deadly path, Valerie Martin vowed to herself that the story would be different in the home she runs in France. The action she took to keep COVID-19 at bay, to stop it from infecting and killing the vulnerable older adults in her care, was both drastic and effective: Martin and her staff locked themselves in with the 106 residents.

The aim of using personal protective equipment ( PPE ) is to protect against health or safety risks at work. There are often no set rules for PPE choice and practice in patient care so a risk assessment based on patient history, presenting care needs and experience of the user must guide PPE use.
The Pentagon on Wednesday announced a $134 million deal to buy personal protective equipment for medical personnel at more than 15,000 U.S. nursing homes to aid in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
The contract, given to the Federal Resources Supply Company, is for PPE kits including protective eyewear, gloves, gowns, and masks, Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. Mike Andrews said in a statement.
Deliveries of the kits started earlier this week in New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Philadelphia and will be completed across the United States, Puerto Rico and Guam by the end of June, according to the statement.
Under the deal - made in coordination with FEMA and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services - 1.2 million goggles, 64.4 million pairs of gloves, 12.8 million gowns and 1.8 million masks will be distributed, as designated by FEMA.
States have experienced a shortage of PPE at hospitals and medical centers across the country in the fight against COVID-19.
The Pentagon has already awarded a $133 million contract for N95 masks and earlier this month gave 3M a $126 million contract to speed up the existing delivery schedule of the scarce masks.
