More than 2 million sign 'Justice For Elijah McClain' petition nearly a year after his death More than 2 million signed a petition demanding justice for Elijah McClain, who died after Colorado police placed him in a carotid hold last year. The petition calls on Adams County District Attorney Dave Young, Mayor Mike Coffman and the Aurora Police Department to conduct “a more in-depth investigation" and remove the officers involved from duty.

He accused Democrats of “playing a dangerous game of politics” - essentially taking a gamble that after November’s elections they’ll be in a commanding position to push through the reforms that they want intact, rather than see them watered- down now by a compromise with the Senate.

Elijah McClain died after being put in a chokehold and injected with ketamine in Denver last year. Colorado is to re-examine the death of a young black man in police custody after growing outrage and a petition signed by more than two million people.

Colorado protesters shut down Highway 225 Saturday in a peaceful demonstration calling for justice in the death of Elijah McClain.

McClain, 23, died last August during a confrontation with Aurora police officers. One officer placed McClain in a carotid hold, or chokehold. McClain suffered a heart attack while in the ambulance and was declared brain dead three days later.

Demonstrators on Saturday first gathered at the Aurora Municipal Center and were on the highway about an hour later, according to CNN affiliate KMGH-TV. Police had already shut down the highway before protesters arrived, the affiliate said. The Aurora Police Department tweeted that the protests were peaceful with no injuries or arrests reported.

He accused Democrats of “playing a dangerous game of politics” - essentially taking a gamble that after November’s elections they’ll be in a commanding position to push through the reforms that they want intact, rather than see them watered- down now by a compromise with the Senate.

The lawyer representing Elijah McClain 's family calls the Colorado district attorney's claim that McClain suffered no injuries whatsoever "absolutely preposterous."

"We not only recognize a person's right to freedom of speech and expression; we support and protect their right to do so in a peaceful manner," Interim Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson wrote in a statement to KMGH.

Wilson said the community was reeling from McClain's death, who she said "was not only a beloved son, brother and friend, but also a valued member of our community."

"I have heard from our community, and I am listening today,"Wilson wrote. "Their voices and concerns are not falling on deaf ears. I am devoted to meaningful reform, just as every good officer out here today is."

Protesters broke into different groups after shutting down the highway, police tweeted. Some remained on the highway while others moved to 6th Avenue and continued to walk, the tweet read.

Three Aurora officers fired for taking photos near Elijah McClain memorial site .
"I am disgusted to my core," said the interim chief of the police department in Colorado. The officers involved in the photos, which show three of them smiling as one is in a mock chokehold, were identified by interim Chief Vanessa Wilson of the Aurora Police Department as Jason Rosenblatt, Erica Marrero and Kyle Dittrich. A fourth officer, Jaron Jones, resigned Tuesday.
