US Gov. DeWine: ‘This mask is a symbol of freedom’
Ohio Governor Mandates Masks In COVID 'Red Alert' Counties
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s administration will soon mandate masks in seven of the state’s counties struggling with a resurgent coronavirus in a decision that is likely to only further add to the tension brewing between the state’s GOP leader and his inner party critics. The list includes the three most populous counties in the state that have seen a rising number of cases in the weeks after allowing a gradual reopening of some businesses. “If we want to be able to go out and live our lives, this mask is a symbol of freedom,” Gov. Mike DeWine said.
The Ohio governor has done all to encourage – but not mandate – the wearing of faces masks during the coronavirus pandemic, issuing yet another plea to the public on Monday.
"It's a symbol of freedom, because if we get 75% to 80% of the people who are out in public who are wearing this mask, we are going to see these numbers get better,” he said, addressing criticism that wearing masks infringes on people's civil liberties.
Total probable and confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in Ohio stood at 51,789 Tuesday, with deaths exceeding 2,800.

Not only have confirmed cases risen, the governor said hospitalizations have as well. These trends could continue if Ohioans do not take proper precautions, the governor said.
Those precautions will not likely included a statewide mandate to wear face covering. However, the governor has previously hinted that mandatory mask usage could be issued in hotspot counties.
“Throughout this, as reopenings began, our businesses and people have been wearing masks in the businesses. That makes a difference. That is very, very good. We’re urging people, of course voluntarily, to wear masks.” DeWine said.
The governor entertained questions last week on possibly requiring mask use across the state, much like measures being implemented by a growing number of states.

Mike DeWine moved aggressively to slow the spread of the virus by shutting down the economy and issuing stay-at-home orders, but COVID-19 numbers have been climbing again after DeWine started reopening the state.
DeWine said if that a decision would be made, it would likely come down to a county issue.
“As we see alarming numbers in Dayton and Cincinnati... These are conversations that we’re going to be having with local officials about what are the different things that we can do,” he said.
As far as implementing mandatory masks in specific counties, the governor said it would be a collaborative decision between him and local officials.
“These are not going to be unilateral decisions,” he said. “These are decisions that we are going to make informed by the data and informed by discussions with local officials, but yes, we are looking at the state now in segments, we’re looking at it in regions, we’re looking at it in counties."
