The jogger alerted police after discovering the remains in St. Petersburg, per a police release.

St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez told multiple outlets that detectives were unable to identify the person's gender or race based on the head alone. She did, however, confirm it was a human head.

“A lot of people might have thought it was just an animal but she perceived it really did look like a human,” Fernandez told the Tampa Bay Times.

Per the Tampa Bay Times and CNN, the jogger discovered it in a grassy area between the sidewalk and the southern edge of the road. The area was closed off to traffic due to ongoing investigation.

Detectives do not believe the victim died at the scene, but are unsure how long the head was at that location. The jogger had run through the area on Sunday without noticing the head, per CNN.

Representatives from the St. Petersburg Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
