US O'Connor wins Giro mountain finish - Almeida defends Rosa
Two more Giro drivers tested positive - Team Mitchelton-Scott gets out
The Giro d'Italia 2020 continues on Tuesday with a smaller field of drivers. This is the result of 571 corona tests that were carried out on Sunday and Monday, according to the organizers. © imago images Has to end the Giro: Steven Kruijswijk. Two drivers have therefore been infected with the corona virus. Jumbo-Visma announced that Steven Kruijswijk, eleventh overall, is affected.
Australian Ben O'Connor clinched a stage victory at the Giro d'Italia just one day after finishing second.
On the 203 difficult kilometers from Bassona del Grappa to Madonna di Campiglio, the 24-year-old professional cyclist broke away from a breakaway group and won ahead of the Austrian Hermann Pernsteiner and Thomas de Gendt from Belgium. The day before, O'Connor had been defeated by Jan Tratnik from Slovenia in the last few meters.
The section with three difficult mountains in category one had surprisingly little impact on the overall standings. The Portuguese Joao Almeida was able to parry an attack by his rival Wilco Kelderman (Netherlands) and is still in the lead by a margin of 17 seconds. Otherwise there were no noteworthy attacks by the ranking drivers on the final climb.
There are two more mountain stages on the program until the decisive time trial on Sunday in Milan. The German professionals no longer play a major role after the corona-related exit of Jumbo-Visma around Tony Martin.
