Residents of these areas, where bars, restaurants and most businesses are closed, are only allowed to leave their homes for professional, health or emergency reasons.

Nine regions are classified as orange or intermediate zones - Emilia-Romagna, Friuli, Marche, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Liguria, Puglia, Sicily and Umbria. Only five are in the "yellow" zone, including Lazio around Rome and the Veneto.

In Campania, doctors have been warning for several days about a health system on the verge of collapse, with long queues in front of hospitals. They cite the example of patients placed on oxygen in their car while waiting to be admitted to establishments.

Today, we have more than 800 intensive care beds occupied by patients positive for COVID-19", underlines Enrico Storti, director of the intensive care unit of the Lodi hospital. "We know what to do, we are certainly better prepared than in the first wave but we are also tired and it is not easy to find the same energy."

Italy, one of the countries in Europe hardest hit in the first wave of COVID-19 in the spring, reported 40,902 new contaminations in 24 hours on Friday, a record since the start of the epidemic . The new coronavirus killed 44,139 there.
