US Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Pledges New Border Wall Despite Biden's Day One Orders
Texas governor says power grid fixed; experts cite problems
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Despite experts who say Texas' power grid remains vulnerable, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott declared Tuesday that new reforms “fix all of the flaws” that caused February's deadly winter blackout that left more than 4 million people without power in subfreezing weather. He was joined by Republicans who defended it as a good deal for consumers, even though they gave no direct financial relief to families who were stuck with high energy bills or lost income as the lights and heat stayed off for days.Signing into law two sweeping overhauls in response to one of the largest power outages in U.S.
Texas Gov.announced his plans to build a wall along the Texas-Mexico border during a press conference in Del Rio on Thursday. These plans run contradictory to a proclamation President issued on his first day of office that all border wall construction be stopped.
"President Biden's open-border policies have led to a humanitarian crisis at our southern border as record levels of illegal immigrants, drugs, and contraband pour into Texas," said the Republican Governor. "While securing the border is the federal government's responsibility, Texas will not sit idly by as this crisis grows."
Ducey, Abbott ask other 48 governors to send law enforcement to help patrol US border
Govs. Doug Ducey and Greg Abbott want help with border security, but one advocate said they are feeding hysteria.Ducey published a copy of the letter on Thursday afternoon, timing its publication with a border summit that Abbott kicked off in Del Rio, Texas.
Abbott has yet to release the details of his plans, such as where and when construction will begin, or how it will be funded. He did release some details on a few other border initiatives, including the roughly $1.1 billion earmarked in the recently-passed state budget for border security. He talked about plans to introduce a Governor's Task Force on Border and Homeland Security.
"It will help all of us to work on ways to stem the flow of unlawful immigration and to stem the flow of illegal contraband," Abbott said of the task force, which will meet bi-weekly and include representation from several state agencies.
Abbott did not further directly address the escalating legal conflict between himself and the Biden administration. After Abbott recently ordered that state licensure be pulled from state child care facilities that housed migrant children, the Biden administration threatened to sue.
Texas to Start Arresting All Migrants Coming Across Border, Greg Abbott Vows
According to governor's office, Abbott has deployed 1,000 Texas Department of Public Safety troopers and hundreds of soldiers from the Texas National Guard to the border this year. The governor has also instructed state officials to end contracts with the Biden administration for migrant shelters that hold unaccompanied children, who have been arriving in record numbers at the border. A report obtained by The New York Times found that there were nearly 17,000 migrant youth in the care of Health and Human Services as of Wednesday. Among them, 8,000 are living in shelters licensed for federal use.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services attorney Paul Rodriguez called Abbott's move a "direct attack" on the effort to rehome federal migrant children and gave the state until Friday to respond to a letter demanding clarification of the order that appears to violate federal law. Fifty-two state-licensed shelters that house approximately 8,600 children could be affected.
On his first day in office, President Biden issued an order to pause border wall construction, as well as taxpayer funding to their construction. He also directed theto suspend and investigate the "remain in Mexico" order, which has since been
The Biden Administration has said its new policies are an attempt at the more humanitarian treatment of migrants.
In a disaster declaration he issued on June 1, Abbott said "President Biden's open-border policies have paved the way for dangerous gangs and cartels, human traffickers, and deadly drugs like fentanyl to pour into our communities."
Biden RETURNS $2billion set aside for Trump's border wall
The Biden administration is returning $2 billion set aside for Donald Trump's signature border wall and calling on Congress to cancel other funding, despite a surge in people trying to cross illegally. President Joe Biden suspended construction when he took power but his new plan falls short of canceling it altogether.Instead, it ends fast track provisions.'Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border and costs American taxpayers billions of dollars is not a serious policy solution or responsible use of Federal funds,' said the White House Office of Management and Budget (O.M.B).
"Meanwhile, landowners along the border are seeing their property damaged and vandalized on a daily basis while the Biden Administration does nothing to protect them."
Gov. Abbott did not directly address the potential legal issues of his wall in his public appearance on Thursday, nor did he say if he plans for any of the Texas border wall's funding to come from the $1.1 billion border security allocation in his state's newly passed budget.
