Australia races against time to avoid an 'in danger' rating at UNESCO vote
The Australian government and a United Nations body are facing off this week over whether the Great Barrier Reef is "in danger" of losing its "outstanding universal value."The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)'s World Heritage Committee is scheduled to vote on Friday on whether the reef, which is on the World Heritage List, should be officially labeled as "in danger." It is nicknamed the green heart of Africa. Created in 1970,park was quickly invaded by poacher gangs, from which this ranking in 1984 on the list of heritage at risk. In recent years, important work has been done in the fight against poaching.
"The management of this park has been really improved, because there are several NGOs that intervene in this park, including the Global Fund for Nature. There is also the ICCN, the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature, with the help of some donors, "explains Landing Mane, the Director of the Central African Forests Satellital Observatory.
