Raleigh resident Brian Davis decided this year was the year to give back and so he took to his Nextdoor app to see if anyone needed somewhere to spend Thanksgiving, as reported by ABC11.

The app allows neighbors to connect with one another based on their location, sharing information and communicating.

Generally, residents use the social media app to post neighborhood updates, missing and found pets and items, reporting suspicious activity, and more.

How the American Right Claimed Thanksgiving for Its Own

How the American Right Claimed Thanksgiving for Its Own Pass the free enterprise, please.Making use of excerpts from Plymouth Colony Gov. William Bradford’s journals, all of these pieces tell roughly the same story about “the real meaning of Thanksgiving”: the Pilgrims went to Plymouth in 1620 with a utopian vision of holding property in common, but after being mugged by the reality of two years of poor harvests and starvation, they abandoned collectivism for capitalist individualism. These articles conclude in roughly the same way: The lesson of the first Thanksgiving was that “socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets.

But, Davis used the app to ask local individuals if they wanted to spend Thanksgiving with him—whether they knew him or not.

"I have great friends and would like to invite anyone, families included, to share a meal with my friends," read part of the invite, as per ABC11

Despite expecting just a handful of responses, the Raleigh local received over 400-plus. "I don't have a lot, but whatever I have, I'm willing to give," he told ABC11.

Now, Davis is expecting four complete strangers to join him at his home for Thanksgiving today.

"It means everything. I want to be able to give back and serve," he said. "If that means money, time or bending my ear."

It was Davis' health scare in the form of a heart attack earlier this year that compelled him to make Thanksgiving about the giving part this time.

Bidens open holidays with Christmas tree and 'friendsgiving'

Bidens open holidays with Christmas tree and 'friendsgiving' WASHINGTON (AP) — Jill Biden opened the holiday season at the White House by breaking off a sprig from the official Blue Room tree and giving it — and a big smooch — to her toddler grandson. “Look how beautiful this is,” the first lady said of the 18 1/2-foot (5.6 meter) Fraser fir that was delivered by wagon to her Pennsylvania Avenue doorstep by Clydesdale horses named Ben and Winston. “It is beautiful. It's magnificent, really,” she said Monday. The first lady later joined President Joe Biden for a visit to the Army’s Fort Bragg in North Carolina to celebrate “friendsgiving” with service members and military families.

"After being sick and almost passing away, I guess it's a maturation thing," he said. "For 55 years of my life, I've taken and to be able to give, it means the world to me."

"Thankyou for restoring my faith in humanity," said one respondent to Davis' invite.

Strangers becoming Thanksgiving guests is one of the internet's favorite tales, as shown by the story of Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench.

In 2016, Hinton went viral after posting the Thanksgiving invite text he accidentally received by a grandmother who texted the wrong number for her grandson.

When Hinton asked who he was speaking to, Dench said she was his grandmother but a few selfies clarified it was a case of a wrong number.

That didn't stop Hinton attending the holiday though, as he asked if he could "still get a plate."

Dench obliged, telling him "Of course you can. That's what grandmas do...feed everyone."

This year will mark the sixth year in a row Hinton has had a Thanksgiving meal with Dench and her family, and it never ceases to amaze the internet each time.

What do Native Americans really think about Thanksgiving?

What do Native Americans really think about Thanksgiving? The Great Falls Tribune surveyed more than 40 Indigenous people across 12 tribes about their thoughts on Thanksgiving. But as we learned from Eryn Dion in last year's edition of This is America, the first Thanksgiving actually has a fraught history, as the pilgrims later violated their agreements and attacked and encroached upon Wampanoag lands. This brutality was not uncommon — upon arrival in America, Europeans broke promises and inflicted violence, disease and assimilation against Native people nationwide for generations.
