Most of the time, the trees are felled and the sealed surfaces then set on fire to create new pasture areas and arable land for soy cultivation. The topic of environmental protection also plays a role in the presidential election on Sunday. Brazil's right -wing President Jair Bolsonaro sees the Amazon area primarily as an economic potential and wants to open up further areas for agriculture and mining. However, his opponent, ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has promised to strengthen environmental and climate protection in the future. Lula is clearly ahead in the surveys.
