An Australian surfer was attacked by a shark just over a mile away from where another man was more seriously mauled Monday.

Jason Longrass, 41, was surfing at Lefthanders beach near Gracetown in Western Australia when a shark bit his right leg and his board, according to reports.

"He just headed in straight for me, bee-lined straight at me and I went to slap the water but then he made a sudden acceleration and just nailed the board," Longrass said.

Longrass was somehow able to fight off the shark and get back to shore with only minor injuries that were treated at the scene.

Alejandro Travaglini, who was attacked 1.5 miles away while surfing near Gracetown, wasn't quite so unscathed.

Travaglini, 37, was attacked around 8 a.m. and was able to claw his way to the beach despite having suffered serious wounds to both legs.

Paramedics treated Travaglini at the beach before he was airlifted more than 150 miles to the city of Perth for treatment at a hospital.

Two hours later, witnesses said a 13-foot shark was spotted off a nearby beach.

The attack prompted the World Surf League to postpone the nearby Margaret River Pro international surfing contest.
