The president’s decision to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem—while recognizing the latter as the capital of Israel—received widespread criticism around the world, particularly from Palestinians who burned photographs of him. Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six-Day War and claimed the whole city as its capital, but Palestinians believe that the capital of an independent state of theirs belongs in East Jerusalem.

Ivanka Trump, who converted to Judaism before marrying Kushner in 2009, during her last visit to Jerusalem said it was "deeply personal” for her to stand at the wall.

“It was really just us, it was our family that was there,” she said. “It was beyond special—for each of these moments it’s hard to find the words to adequately describe them.”
