Targeted Killing

At least 19 Palestinians and four Israelis have been killed since border sniping Friday escalated into an intense confrontation over the weekend. The first assassination target was a Gazan man Israel accused of funneling Iranian money to militant groups, who used it to buy weapons. A Palestinian baby and her pregnant relative were also killed, with each side blaming the other for the fatal strike.

One of the Israeli casualties was killed when militants fired a Kornet guided antitank missile -- one of the most sophisticated weapons in their arsenal -- at his car.

By late Sunday some 600 rockets had been fired into Israel. More than 150 were intercepted by missile defense batteries, but several dozen landed in urban areas where they hit homes, factories and cars.

Israel hit more than 250 targets in Gaza, including military compounds and training camps, naval vessels and weapons facilities. The military said it also destroyed tunnels dug by Islamic Jihad to infiltrate Israel.

Army spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus said security services had foiled a Hamas cyber attack that aimed to disrupt Israeli civilian life. Hamas’s cyber capabilities were very basic, he told reporters, and the army destroyed the building that housed the unit.

Cairo talks

Gaza militant groups had sent delegations to Cairo for talks with truce mediators before the fighting broke out, and those efforts continued Sunday. For more than a year, Hamas has been sponsoring weekly protests at the border to draw attention to the Palestinians’ plight and deflect popular anger away from Hamas’s own failures and onto Israel. Gaza has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade since Hamas wrested control of the territory in 2007, and sanctions imposed by the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority, which is locked in a power struggle with Hamas, have intensified the strip’s distress.

The two sides have fought three wars since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007, but have stopped short of a fourth despite repeated confrontations over the past year. Israeli officials have said their priority is to confront Iran’s attempts to entrench itself militarily on Israel’s Syrian border, and don’t want to get bogged down in Gaza.

Iran instigated the latest round of fighting so “Israel will be focusing on Gaza and will not have enough energy to deal with the building of the independent Iranian war machine in Syria,” Israel’s former national security adviser Yaakov Amidror told reporters.

Eurovision Factor

One wildcard is the Eurovision song contest later this month: Canceling the competition -- or holding it under rocket fire -- could harm Israel’s effort to showcase itself as a top-tier tourist destination. That gives militants leverage to press Israel for money or concessions that were discussed after previous rounds of fighting.

Israel is prepared for several days of fighting, but doesn’t necessarily want the situation to escalate further, army spokesman Conricus said.

“Where this will go depends on the level of aggression of Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Hamas,” he said.
