Mexican national guard forces will begin deploying to the country's southern border as part of an immigration enforcement deal reached with the U.S., Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said Wednesday.

"Starting from today, and in the coming days, the deployment is going to progress rapidly," Ebrard said in a news conference with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, according to Reuters.

In the deal the U.S. and Mexico signed Friday, Mexico agreed to step up efforts to stop the flow of migrants fleeing Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and traveling through Mexico. The agreement averted the imposition of tariffs on Mexican goods, which President Donald Trump threatened to implement if Mexico did not increase its immigration enforcement.
