Iran’s Gambit: Force the World to Rein In Trump The Trump administration has portrayed Iran’s recent moves, including its threat to resume stockpiling low-enriched uranium in violation of the nuclear agreement, as proof that Iran is an implacable rogue state, bent on acquiring nuclear weapons, that can be contained only through the threat of military force. Iran has indeed often acted as a regional provocateur, but in this case some nonpartisan experts on Iran and on United States policy in the Middle East see something different.

(Bloomberg) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that a war between the U.S. and Iran would be “catastrophic” for the Middle East and may trigger a fresh wave of refugees from the region.

The U.S. hasn’t ruled out the use of force amid rising tensions with Iran in the Persian Gulf, Putin said at his annual “Direct Line” call-in show on Thursday. “I want to say at once that this would be a catastrophe for the region” that may stoke “a surge in violence and perhaps an increase in the number of refugees,” he said.

Iran Says It Will Pass a Uranium Cap. Is It a Threat? What Happens Next?.
Amid escalating tensions with the United States, Iran said on June 17 that by Thursday it would surpass the limit on the uranium supply permitted under the 2015 nuclear agreement, a potentially combustible new phase in the country’s confrontation with Washington. The declaration came days after the United States accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers, and days before Iran shot down an American drone and President Trump approved, then aborted, a strike in retaliation. Iran has threatened further acts of noncompliance with the accord in the coming weeks.
